Begins to epitomize the worst in fantasy: endless books that never climax, but just continue, characters that never embrace their actual humanity, but manage to stay 2 dimensional, but hey, otherwise Jordan's at about 12,000 pages and still going.

enjoyed an insider perspective of the sandinista movement, but couldn't take her narcissism.

I was totally enthralled and had no idea what was going to happen next. I was a little disappointed with the ending.

READ Anne Tyler. She is a wonderfully subtle writer that writes about real life that is interesting because it is real!I love her work

Interesting book. Set in the not too distant future, next Sunday A.D. Japan is run by a fascist government. Dictating everyday life to a minor degree, however once per year "The Program" is run. Through flashbacks you gain the participants' insight into what it is. One junior high school class (Forty-two students. Significant number? Sarcasm? I'm not familiar enough with the Japanese school system to comment reliably.) is forced to kill each other off. Lord of the Flies crossed with Survivor, but with a MAC-10. And let's be honest, what DOESN'T get better with a MAC-10? If Voltron had a MAC-10 instead of his blazing sword, he could wack Robeasts at a distance. But I digress. It's translated from Japanese, and suffers mightily from anime-esque dialogue. Randomly chosen example from Page 57: "Impulsive actions are strictly prohibited. That means whispering will not be permitted. It's hard on me but if you whisper, I'll toss another knife at you!" It's a decent story. Watching the kids responses to the violence is telling- and probably reasonably accurate. The aforementioned flashbacks detract a lot from the flow, as the author tries to craft a uniquely enduring lifestory for each of these plucky students. Realistically, you won't care about most of em. Typically, it's chock full of childish banter about stupid crap, like crushes. Not the best commentary on violence ever written, but at least he takes a fresh angle. Published initially in 1999, I think he foretells the rise of reality TV, blended with a little Running Man. Oh, and Stephen King thinks it is "an insanely entertaining pulp riff." Says so on the cover.

truly an inspirational story of this young girl raped from day one of her existence and the teacher who helped her on the path to a better life. If only it worked more often and there were more people like blue rain. Writing was choppy but attributable to her learning to read at 16. I recommend this one for sure.

Currently my favorite of the series! The characters truly come into their own and connect with the reader, and the vivid imagery is even more lovely than previous books. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series!

It was a pretty fun read or listen (did book on CD). Some of the humor got a little bit tiresome, but for the most part it was funny and lighthearted.

I very much enjoyed it, I am writing this so many years later and do not remember too much about the book except that I couldn't put it down and read it in 4 weeks.

I read this aloud with the girls this spring and it was very fun to compare the book to the movie that they love so much. Plus, my Mallory has gotten to the point that she's really great at taking turns reading aloud to us too. It was a great read for us all at night.
