Cute. Reminiscent of Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist, but not really as good as that. Still, a sweet little story with nice storytelling. If it were a movie, Michael Cera could rightly play the main character (whereas I believe he was mis-cast as Nick in that movie).

I badly wanted to like this more than I did. It was pretty uneven in places & one translation was so torturous, I gave up on it. I had to force myself to complete the book before leaving for a high school year abroad in Finland. Almost no Finn was impressed I had read it (few enough of them had read this classic). Still, I ended up living in a district on a street named for characters and regions from 'The Kalevala.' And I'm grateful form the influence it had on Tolkien & Longfellow.

Though Iles is best known for writing well-crafted crime novels set in various locales throughout the south, this one has a surprising supernatural element to it that I felt added another dimension, making it even harder to put down. Though I've enjoyed all of Iles's novels that I've read, this one is my favorite to date.

very good but sad story. what i liked best is his style of writing. upon starting it i was incredulous that i hadn't read him before - his sparse, direct, economical style is what good story-telling needs most. looking forward to reading more from him

Quick fast read. In these Ponzi schemes it always amazes how people get suckered in when the whole thing is such a convoluted mess. Twenty years of nutiness with this joker and of course as in the madoff case the ignored calls to the SEC and in this story the FDIC. It's almost like they just don't want to impede these fellows.
