Friends strongly recommended Muriel Barbery to me. This is the second of her books that I've tried, and most likely will be the last. It isn't that the premise isn't interesting -- an obnoxious, influential food critic lies dying, thinking back over his life, and the tastes that he'd love to savor. Nor is the narration - nicely done by a cast of thousands. It just seemed like a pretentiously overblown vignette of a man that I am glad to not have to meet. Luckily it was short.

I'd give this book 2.5 stars if I could. The prose is at best workmanlike and the characters are mostly two-dimensional, but it does deliver a good story in a brisk and effective fashion. Ed Gorman called the Vietnam: Ground Zero series (which is what The Scorpion Squad series metamorphosed into after four books) "Some of the most riveting war fiction written..." Ed Gorman's not exactly Harold Bloom, but his opinion still carries some weight, so I'm looking forward to reading more of the series and seeing if it gets better. Judging only by the first book, this is a pretty standard mid-'80s men's adventure series, albeit one based more in historical reality than the Executioner or Destroyer series. (Body Count is set in the Mekong Delta a few months before the Gulf of Tonkin incident.) On the plus side, however, while this novel is unsurprisingly pro-American, it still does a decent job showing how dedicated the Viet Cong were, as well as how disorganized and ineffectual the ARVN were, giving a certain sense of futility to the U.S. Special Forces' and LLDB's climactic victory.

This book was such a good follow-up to Plainsong! There is something about Haruf's writing style and characters that I love--a familiarity that just makes me feel grounded and safe (even when what he's writing about is not particularly so). In this book, we again meet the McPheron brothers, Victoria Roubideaux, and Tom Guthrie and Maggie Jones, but we are introduced to several new characters whose lives intersect in subtle or overt ways. The characters are so well drawn, you begin to feel like you live with them and have known them for a long time. If you read Plainsong, I highly recommend this book. If you haven't read Plainsong, I recommend you read it first and then this one.

I read this originally for historical purposes, just to see what all the fuss was about really in all the other biographies I'd read. However, I took it out of the library and couldn't put it down. I loved Strachey's quiet exasperation of the Queen's somewhat questionable fashion sense at the state visit to Paris in 1855. It was the first time I'd read about such a reaction to her clothing and the slightly unnerving image of all that green and carnations was rather amusing. As was the profusion of rings and (of course) the giant gold poodle handbag. I also found it extremely interesting how well Strachey wrote about Albert's death, especially as he wrote it before authors could use the Queen's diaries and a great deal of other sources to expand their knowledge. In fact, as he wrote 'Queen Victoria' in 1921, Princess Beatrice would still have been alive and still editing said diaries! I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in Victoria, as it gives an amusing and concise history of her life without being too long or complicated.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started THE WINDS OF KHALAKOVO. It was recommended to me and though I purchased it this summer it took several months for me to get around to it. I am sorry I waited so long to read it. Bradley P. Beaulieu, paints a beautiful world that I could picture as I read. I am grateful that I had a small knowledge of Russia, thank you older brother who was obsessed with Russia during high school, but it is by no means required to enjoy the book. THE WINDS OF KHALAKOVO takes place in a society that is similar to that of Russia during the time of Czars. The population live on these small islands and are grouped together and ruled by duchies. The son of one of the dukes, Nikandr, is determined to find a cure to a wasting disease that is killing is sister and is now taking him. Not only is the population of some of the duchies being decimated by this disease but there is a faction of the populace who hold a grudge against the aristocracy. When the high duke is killed, Nikandr has to determine whether it was a freak accident or an assassination. The characters are vivid, the plot moves along, though I wouldn't necessarily call it breakneck, and the magic system, did I mention the awesome magic using elemental spirits, is unique. I was excited to hear that there will be a sequel but the book ends in such a way that I don't feel like there is anything untold. I am curious to see what else Bradley P. Beaulieu will do with this world. This book isn't for young adults, but I was pleased it wasn't overly graphic in any way. Can I just add that this is one of my favorite covers. It is stunning and really helps solidify the world with airships and mystic creatures that cross between worlds.

It's another installment in the lives of Lucia and Mapp and the circle of acquaintances in Tilling, with more of the social manipulations that are the essence of these stories. You could read any of the 6 books that have been grouped into a series called "Make Way for Lucia" as stand-alones, but I have enjoyed reading them in order. I like these E. F. Benson stories as much as I like P. G. Wodehouse Blandings stories, and perhaps even a little more. It is amazing how these can be stories about upper middle class British folks set in the 1920s to 1930s, and still feel like they are current tales. It is amazing how events and behaviors can be so ridiculous and outrageous, yet told so well that they are believable. I'm reading the final book, "Trouble for Lucia" now, but with confidence I can heartily recommend all of them.
