I wanted to wait until I read the entire series before adding a review -- but oops there is another one just released. But I am going to review now anyway. Primarily I wanted to get a real feel for the 'mystery genre' as opposed to just a mystery. And Laura Childs was a good way to go about it. There was the same pattern - murder in the first chapter, introduce a wide array of suspects, have a few harrowing experiences for the heroine, and then in the last chapter solve the mystery with a near miss experience for the heroine. Don't get me wrong. Laura Childs accomplishes this in a consistently charming way. Her characters are always super civilized (until the killer shows her true colors). The characters all go to the same society parties, they all seem to have to buy super stylish clothes just to attend said parties, they all live in the same old 'restored at huge expense' mansions. The shop keepers - including our heroine are all super modern women who deal in high end jewelry or antiques. It seemed there was no such thing as an ordinary joe who really had to work for a living. I guess that is why I am not going to read the next book. All that sameness had me turning to the recipes and tea party suggestions before I read the book. That told me something. It was time for me to find another author. But for a real fan of the mystery genre - Laura Childs really can't be beat.

Reading this one aloud to the kids (after reading it for the first time myself last year) - love MacDonald, love Curdie. The kids are enthralled. We just finished it, and even Sage wanted immediately to begin the sequel (Princess and Curdie). I love wonderful children's literature!

In which Fitzgerald fictionalizes his own adolescence. Like his Pat Hobby sequence, these stories are probably a lot more satisyfing collected than they would be separately, even though they were originally published that way. Together, they read as episodes in the characters' lives, and there's less pressure for each story to be self-contained, which they aren't, really. The Basil Lee stories are much better than the Josephine Perry stories. (Fitzgerald, it seems, doesn't know much about female adolescence.) And no one would consider either story cycle superior to the last three novels. But--again, like Pat Hobby--they have a certain charm.

ITS COMPLETELY INSANE. if youve never really delved into the world of 18th century gothic literature, hit this book up. its the gothic world in one incestuous, murderous, crazed little novel. you'll NEVER guess how it ends. seriously, read it. be ready for some ridiculous reading.

A quick primer on small group bible studies. Not bad, but I would've appreciated a slightly more conceptual approach, focusing on the proper spirit and goal of a Bible Study, rather than the finnicky details they occasionally fell on. Still, it has some good points in it. It also debunks a few bible study myths that too many people believe in, such as the myth that a good small group needs to avoid controversial topics. I enjoyed their reminders in that aspect.
