I read the first few days of this book and did not like it at all. There is a lack of balance in this book - too touchy feely not enough substance.

I won this book from First Reads. This is a great book. A wonderful surprising read. Thank you.

This book isn't as astounding as the previous books. Joey still struggles with his ADHD, but his parents, including his once responsible mother, behave ridiculously — without any concern for their son. It's a new twist in Joey's life, but it makes me wonder if Gantos is running out of material.

Yes! Loved it. I was so sucked in, I didnt realize I was running out of pages. I thought it was only a three book series. Guess not. Now I am stumped, for probably like a year. Damn editing process. Laurel is in more danger than usual and her friends, all of them come to the rescue. When Yuki shows up, I'm not sure what to think, but evitually I figure it out. There was definitely a curve ball with Klea. Didnt really see that one coming. Iguess if they dont change it in the forth book. Awwww! there is so much more I want to say. No spoilers though. Laurel has to finally make a decision about David and Tamani, and even though I am not completely satisfied, I'll take what I can get. I soooooo cant wait until next summer when book four should come out. Read on!

This is an amazing read. You'll barely notice that it's almost 500 pages. Perfect mix of human drama and historical events (the Nigerian civil war of the late '60s), all spun together without being pedantic. Adiche is adept at swiching back and forth between time periods and characters without losing the rhythm of the story. I started reading this during spring break to get a jump on schoolwork for the coming weeks, but I couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it today.

read for a class, but I had already read The Things They Carried, and Combat Zone didn't disappoint.

Great debut book about the struggle for love and faith in ancient Rome. David is a young Hebrew of the sect of Christians when his parents are arrested before his eyes. He is sold into slavery to a cruel despotic master who controls the lives of all around him, while David strikes a friendship with his beautiful young granddaughter, Alethea. Moving, sympathetic characters kept me invested in this story of survival, hope, and triumphing faith. A tender and at times passionate forbidden romance evolves a the two come of age. Themes of betrayal, redemption, sacrifice, and valor emerge, all the while the reader is immersed in authentic Roman history.
