I left my comments on the series as a whole in my review of the first book, Sum of All Men, but let me say this about this book, because it is a big pet peeve of mine -- It is a different size than the other books. I own all four, in hardcover, and this one is larger than the other three. It drives me crazy and it looks retarded on my shelf. End rant.
It's 1810, and sixteen-year-old orphan Nicola Sparks has just finished her schooling at a young ladies' academy. Now she's ready for her first London season. In fact, she's already picked the young man she hopes will ask her to marry him: Lord Sebastian Bartholomew, a viscount who will inherit his father's title of earl. Nicola is invited to stay with the Bartholomews, and eagerly accepts the invitation. And it seems like a dream come true when Lord Sebastian proposes marriage. But Nathaniel Sheridan, the infuriating older brother of Nicola's best friend, Eleanor, causes Nicola to question Lord Sebastian's true motives in asking her to marry him. Soon Nicola begins to wonder if it's really Lord Sebastian she loves, and not someone she's been overlooking all along. I highly recommend this new book from the Avon True Romance series. Meg Cabot is a wonderful author of contemporary and supernatural stories for teens, and I'm happy to say she's just as good at writing a historical romance for young adults.

running with scissors was good. it was funny, and sort of twisted, and generally entertaining (if a little disturbing in parts). sequels are notoriously worse than their predecessors, but dry broke out of that stereotype beautifully. it was great. perhaps it's too much to call it 'moving,' but it almost was. more mature than 'scissors' and more poignant. very well executed.
"Edgar Drake lives a quiet life in late 19th-century London as a tuner of rare pianos. When he's summoned to Burma to repair the instrument of an eccentric major, Anthony Carroll, Edgar bids his wife good-bye and begins the months-long journey east. The first half of the book details his trip, and while Mason's descriptions of the steamships and trains of Europe and India are entertaining, the narrative tends to drag; Edgar is the only real character readers have met, and any conflicts he might encounter are unclear. Things pick up when Edgar meets the unconventional Carroll, who has built a paradise of sorts in the Burmese jungle. Edgar ably tunes the piano, but this turns out to be the least of his duties, as Carroll seeks his services on a mission to make peace between the British and the local Shan people. During his stay at Carroll's camp, Edgar falls for a local beauty, learns to appreciate the magnificence of Burma's landscape and customs and realizes the absurdity of the war between the British and the Burmese. While Mason's writing smoothly evokes Burma's beauty, and the idea that music can foster peace is compelling, his work features so many familiar literary pieces-the nerdy Englishman; the steamy locale; the unjust war; the surprisingly cultured locals-that readers may find themselves wishing they were turning the pages of Orwell's Burmese Days or E.M. Forster's A Passage to India instead."

I believe that this is Adavita Kala's first book. It is writn from a first person point of view that gives it almost a childish feel but it is about a 29 year old Indian woman who is coming to terms with herself and the fact that she is still single. All I can really say is that it is cute, but there is so much rambling and the story almost seems to contradict itself on occasion. But it also isn't a fantacy book which might have something to do with me not being that into it, my mother on the other hand loved it.

I didn't like or understand this book at all when I read it in high school, but I enjoyed it much more on my latest reading. I don't think I understood in high school that all the characters were drunk most of the time. The understanding of that heightened my enjoyment immensely. I still don't really get why it's such a great classic of literature. I think it's a bit overrated.
I'm upping this book from four stars to five. Although I don't agree with everything in it (a colossal reading list that doesn't include Raymond Carver!) there are enough gems scattered throughout the book to make it comparable to John Gardner's The Art of Fiction and Charles Baxter's Burning Down the House.

You can't get into this book expecting great literature. It is more in the style of listening while your grandmother recalls her past experiences....sometimes out of chronological order but interesting none the less. I think Hazan's description of Italian food and cooking style is very appealing to any who enjoy cooking and are adventurous in their culinary pursuits.
This book was funny. If you want a good laugh I highly recommend it. And it somehow realtes to teh way we still precieve things today.
Another excellent entry in the series. It was interesting to see how a 20 year gap would be filled, but it did it remarkably well. If you liked the other books in the series, this one will be good too.
