Honestly, I thought I'd hate this play. Then I saw it with Liev Schreiber and Alan Alda and was engrossed. This is an incredibly hard play to pull off on stage (there's something about Mamet's stylized dialogue that requires truly talented actors). Probably one of the ten best productions I've ever seen. I mention the staged version because you really get a clear sense of the "feel" of this play from reading it. I can't say it's for everyone; the language is strong and it's decidedly, well, male. Nonetheless, it is worth reading.

I know this book got mixed reviews, but I liked it. The only thing that bothered me about it was that it kept making me feel depressed.

** spoiler alert ** Through the narration of Nick Carraway, the reader is taken into the superficially glittering world of the mansions which lined the Long Island shore in the 1920s, to encounter Nick's cousin Daisy, her brash but wealthy husband Tom Buchanan, Jay Gatsby and the mystery that surrounds him. It's also a love story, of sorts, the narrative of Gatsby's quixotic passion for Daisy Buchanan. The pair meet five years before the novel begins, when Daisy is a legendary young Louisville beauty and Gatsby an impoverished officer. They fall in love, but while Gatsby serves overseas, Daisy marries the brutal, bullying but extremely rich Tom Buchanan. After the war, Gatsby devotes himself blindly to the pursuit of wealth by whatever means--and to the pursuit of Daisy, which amounts to the same thing. His millions made, Gatsby buys a mansion across Long Island Sound from Daisy's patrician East Egg address, throws lavish parties and waits for her to appear. When she does, events unfold with all the tragic inevitability of a Greek drama, with detached, cynical neighbour Nick Carraway acting as chorus throughout.

** spoiler alert ** Really getting sick of Betsy and her nonsense. I am sort of hoping that someone comes to overthrow her. It has been awhile since I first started reading this series but I don't remember her being this unlikable and/or stupid in the first few books. This latest installment really paints her in a terrible light. It seems to me that she is already just as awful as her "future self". Is anyone else surprised by the fact that she goes nuts and starts cutting Sinclair up? She clearly hates him except when they are in bed together, and can someone please explain to me what it is he sees in her??? I will keep reading the series until the end to see what happens, but I am mostly invested in seeing Betsy get whats coming to her.

I waited for LFA excitedly. I was not disappointed. While YA in genre, I think all adults can relate to LFA -- maybe even better than the target YA audience. I heard John speak through his characters (literally, as I knew him in college) and was given permission to add this book to my extensive collection (long story, involving 23 boxes of books when we last moved...). A worthy addition to any library.

Very well-done. I wondered how this could lead into a series. Now I know.

This work may be dated. If a person was raised in a gender-unbiased home, the residual chafing of a woman against the glass ceiling is incomprehensible.

I liked this book because it shows how Katie, the main character, goes through life with her best friend and sister ill.

Johnsergeant recommended this series to me. I don't know to thank or curse him! These books are a commitment and you'll need to devote a good amount of time to them but the rewards are great. This is book two of 6 or 7. They are long books best listened to through the magnificent narration of Davina Porter. I hear her doing the voices of Jamie and Claire in my head throughout the day. I sometimes even hear my own thoughts in Jamie's voice. That is a tell-tale sign of a great narrator! I never thought I would be caught up in a romance story...especially since I consider myself a non-fiction guy...but I highly recommend everyone reading this series beginning with the first book, Outlander. I've been trying to track down whether this series is going to be made into a movie and can find no definitive answer on the internet. Does anyone know for certain? Sorry, for not posting a summary, there are already many good ones out there. I wanted to share, instead, my opinion here.
