If you like beautiful prose, often obscure imagery, then this book is for you. Nabokov is a master at prose, and although one might find that he/she has to spend a considerable amount of time looking up the definitions of words, the book is still worth reading. Pale Fire is one of those books that made me really wish I could write 1/4 as well as the author. As a native Russian, Nabokov writes one gazillion times better than I, a native English speaker.

does anyone remember the episode of the twilight zone where the little kid has amazing psychic powers but basically terrorizes the town he lives in because he a kid and no sense of self-control or responsibility? if someone annoys him or doesn't do what he wants the kid will just make them disappear forever for be transformed into a jack-in-the-box or something. anyway, this book reminds me a lot of that story except the antagonist is not quite as young. still, very similar theme. i liked how everything was all nicely tied up in the end. it held my interest throughout and was a pretty easy read. a good page-turner. this is the 2nd dean koontz book i have ever read. the first one was velocity which i bought randomly in an airport and read it on the plane. that book was BAD. this one was much better.

Cute and funny, although nowhere near as good as the first one.
I read this in school, and it was brutal. No one in my class liked it, the professor included - we kept making jokes like, "it must've been a bad year for the Pulitzer." My favorite thing about it was the last page - both because that meant it was over, and because the last paragraph is the best thing about this book. I'll probably re-read it at some point to see if a few years has changed my attitude/opinion, but I highly, highly doubt it has.

I picked this up in an airport for the flight home without really knowing much about it, but I really enjoyed this book. It's about a young man's summer spent working for the circus back in the 1930s, but it's told through flashbacks because the young man is now 90 years old and in a nursing home. The story is pretty serious -- the main character in present day is dealing with dementia and just generally growing older, and the young man in the circus is dealing with corrupt circus bosses and animal abuse. Although the story is serious, it's captivating, and the author actually did a great deal of research on the early days of circus acts, so some of the more unbelievable happenings are actually based on real events. I would definitely recommend this book, because the story and the description of circus living are fascinating.

I don't think there is a better book out there to date. This is an absolute favorite of mine. It is written with such a poetic hand, I found myself caressing the book as I read. I love DEATH being the narrator, so original. It was also wonderful to hear an account of Nazi Germany that was about the regular citizens, those trapped in the middle of all the horror, who had to go on living life. If you can handle death, you can handle this book. I have read it 3 times in under a year. I love it.
I had a rude awakening very recently concerning the health hazards as well as the immorality of eating meat, and as a result, i've been seeking out information on the meat industry and animal rights. This book is more or less the top of the stack as far as I'm concerned, being a new convert to vegetarianism. It exposes the gross crimes committed against animals every day by the thousands as they're drug through the slaughterhouse, being skinned, mutilated, tortured, beaten, shocked, and scalded while still alive. Federal legislation "requires" humane slaughtering practices, but these are largely ignored as a result of USDA pressure and power over the meat plants and employees. The industry, being concerned only with the amount of production, looks the other way while innocent animals are subjected to gruesome and painful deaths so that we can put dinner on the table. The corruption doesn't just affect the animals; non-enforcement of health standards and practices in the slaughterhouses and packaging plants leaves us with meat products that are more often than not contaminated with fecal matter, bacteria, etc etc etc. Gail Eisnitz courageously investigates and uncovers these and other horrific injustices in the meat industry and presents them to us. Even if you're not particularly interested in animal rights, the governmental corruption this book demonstrates is absolutely astonishing, and the health risks being sold to us at the meat counter are of interest to ANYONE. You'll need a strong stomach to read this one, but it's absolutely worth it.

Started off very slow but was glad I stuck w/ it.
The book is written beautifully and helps one find that inner peace to love anyone (and not just romantically). We've forgotten how to give ourselves to someone 100% because we place things before others. I suggest you read this to figure out what I'm trying to say and not capable of finding the right words.
