I don't know what I can really say about this book that can even begin to sound half as good as the book itself. I've seen the movie a dozen times, though it's been a few years. Unfortunately, not only do I have a good memory, but I'll never forget the giant twist in the story. Knowing how things turn out, though, did not hinder my enjoyment of this book. I loved the way it was written. It was choppy, but almost like a train of thought. I suppose if I read it about 3 more times and had about 5 hours to sit here and give it a worthy review, I could tell you what it's really about or at least what it could be about. I won't, though, because I think it should be read and analyzed individually. If I had to pick my favorite quotes from this book, I would get in trouble, because I'd have to type out the entire novel. Here's a good one from a random page: "I am helpless. I am stupid, and all I do is want and need things. My tiny life. My little shitty job. My Swedish furniture. I never, no, never told anyone this, but before I met Tyler, I was planning to buy a dog and name it 'Entourage.' This is how bad your life can get. Kill me." I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something different. It can be dark, twisted, weird, thoughtful, eye opening, confusing... it is simply wonderful. I think this is one of those books everyone should read and read more than once. I know I will be placing it to the side and picking it up again, hopefully soon. The characters were absolutely brilliant. It kind of makes you wonder if you really know someone. If you really know yourself. It makes you question the world we live in and what it does to people or what we do to the world. Anything else I say would only be spoilers. Just Read It. http://meganm922.blogspot.com/2012/02...

It started out well, but then deteriorated into a typical young girl in many ways. Ah well.

I read this book my freshman year in high school and it really changed the way I read. Up until then, if you had asked me what a book was about, I'd have told you about the plot and the characters. This book is a love story, I guess, but it's really about the differences between and/or the balancing of Lightness (floating through the world, letting good things and bad slide off while continuing to move) and Heaviness, or at least Weight (really stopping to experience the feeling of things, or at least of a thing). I know it sounds trite now, but it was my first discovery that people stretched their minds in such directions, that you could use your brainpower for more interesting stuff than spelling bees and math homework, that there was more to think about and talk about and read about than I had previously imagined. It was really life-changing. I've read one or two things of his since then, and was disappointed; I don't know if this was because I was older, or because the books just weren't as good- I'm guessing it was a combination of the two. I'd probably give this four stars if I just put it on my "read" shelf, but on the "teen" shelf it gets five.

I picked up this book because I absolutely love the Kiera Knightley (etc) movie version of the play, but realized I'd never actually read the book. It's a quick read (7 hrs) if you're familiar with the plot outline, but some of the language is VERY dated and has to be read twice. There is so much more information in the book than the film, however good an interpretation it may be. Notable is the take on Mrs. Bennett (the mother) - the movie portrays her as slightly dotty, but with everyone's best interests at heart. The book goes farther, and states at the end that Mrs. Bennett really disappears from Lizzy and Jane's lives, because she is an embarrassment. I'm sure if I were more familiar with the ins and outs of the small social nuances in England at the time, parts of the book would be even more striking. Lastly, the end of the book details a lot more after Lizzy and Darcy marry - if you (like me) were slightly unsatisfied by the movie's interpretation of this, or wondered what happened to Jane, Caroline Bingley, or Lydia and Wickham, the book does go into all of that. All in all, much better than Emma or Northanger Abbey, and I would definitely recommend you read the original version!

Title: Gathering Blue Author: Lois Lowry Series: The Giver #2 Rating: ★★ Summary: In her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever. As she did in The Giver, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, and what will be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira's plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future. Review: I was disappointed. Utterly disappointed. Compared to The Giver, this was a waste of my time. Things I Loved: I like the world Lowry has created in this sequel. Though the character Kira is dull, the world around her is very easy to picture. Oh, and Matty is just so fun. He gave this book shape. Things I Hated: There was a clear plot in the beginning of the story, but after a couple of chapters, all was resolved and there was nothing to go on from there. She was given a home, a job, and there was nothing else to it. I don't get how the story continued from there. There was no plot, no character development. I felt like the story died. I hope the next book makes up for it. And besides, I am very confused. Where is Jonas and Gabe? Is this world supposed to be Elsewhere? How are the books The Giver and Gathering Blue connected? I need answers, and this book just made me even more confused.

i went into this read a little weary - but it totally surprised me! it takes about 40 pages to get into it, since the story line is so scattered, but: all the weird little drawings and strange commentary are really ...weird and fun.
