Fantastic. Beka Cooper certainly earns her nickname in this novel. She's an endearing character, both stubborn and determined to be the best Dog (Tortall's version of a beat cop) she can be. She's got quite a range of supporting characters too, each one given lots of depth. Beka herself is very practical and her difficulty in public speaking is relatable. I haven't read the Alanna series yet, but I didn't feel I was missing information here. I also thought the diary style the book is written in would be a challenge to really get into, but aside from some false starts at the beginning, it was enjoyable.
LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! Awesome story plus its a science book!!! I'm planning on one day using this book in my classroom.

This is a wonderful picture book with stunning illustrations and a nicely written yet simplistic biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. It is appropriate for all age groups. I enjoyed it very much.

I was living with a friend and learning to read for pleasure again when a dear friend pulled this off her shelf and handed it over. "Read this one." She is a writer and editor; I ignore her suggestions at my peril, so as I moved away, I read it. She's right, it's fantastic. I don't know why, except to say that the characters are utterly compelling and she doesn't waste words. There is just barely enough said, and yet the story is complete. We follow a magical woman-farmer with a checkered past and a riverboat captain who can navigate a changing waterway and not run aground. There are children to tend and a tinker and a plague, and of course the mostly good and mostly evil forces...and a flooded river, and a dog-king. Like really good art, it is finished in the mind of the reader. Let go of your hopes and expectations and fall into the pages.

i was surprised by how quietly and slowly this collection consumed me. july's voice is clean and kind and often humorous. sometimes her protagonists were, well, creepy. but these stories managed to get under my skin in a way that few ever do. it's the kind of book i wish i'd read more slowly, and one i know i'll read again.

The body at the Tower by Y. S. Lee is the second of The Agency series and it certainly didn't disappoint! Mary Quinn is back but this time under the guise of a twelve-year-old boy working at a building construction site. She is calling herself Mark Quinn as she investigates the death of a bricklayer found on the site. Lee is amazing! She does it again weaving a complicated and mysterious nineteenth century mystery novels for young adults. For Mary to dress up as a boy is for her to revisit the past as well as to live in the present undercover. As a convincing boy Mary infiltrates the construction site and works her way around to locate any suspects involved. As she does she comes across an old friend and love, James Easton. Neither are the same and both are very different since they each met over a year ago. Lee's writing is beautiful and her characters well developed and more intimate than ever.
