I decided on a rating of 3 out of 5 stars for this book. I really vacillated on my feelings regarding the book as I read it. On one hand, Melanie Benjamin obviously did extensive research and seamlessly blended the research into a book of fiction that felt very real and was easy to read. On the other hand, I just could not, as hard as I tried, like the main character-Vinnie. I wanted so badly to like her and I felt enormously for her struggles. However, she only thought of herself, never of those around her. She had a desperate need for fame and I felt that this came before everything else, even family and friends. By the end of the book I was simply frustrated with her and could not feel any further compassion. See full review at: http://theinsomniacbibliophile.blogsp...

This was an interesting read. My only complaint was that it was, at times, bogged down by too much detail. Still, the details are fascinating and it was well written with lots of intrigue and Larson did a nice job of staying away from gore.
Huge Tom Robbins fan
Okay, I've debated adding this to my list, because the series seems to be so polarizing. But I have to say, once I started I couldn't stop. Meyer may not be the most intellectually challenging author, but she is one hell of a storyteller. As my friend Andi has said, my mind was full of this world after reading the book. I had to get the next ones right away - I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I'm a life long vampire fan. I quote Buffy often, loved Ann Rice and found myself utterly swept away by the lore. So reading the new twists Meyer added to the mythology was exciting for me - diamond embedded skin instead of bursting into flames? Fun; I only wish Spike glowed like that for Buffy! So, while I sometimes cringe in telling people how into these books I am, it's the truth. They are sexy (even without the sex)and make me happy. I think that's enough to ask for in a series, don't you?

This book takes my back to a hammock in my grandmother's back yard in the summer of my 15th year. I was busy trying to catch up with all the influences of my Beatle hero, John and knew this was one of them, having a lot to do with his approach to the imagry that ended up on "Magical Mystery Tour" and led to "Pepper". A magical story. Makes you wonder about the power of the imagination.
For all those out there that think Miller is just a mysoginst playboy, here is one of 2nd wave feminism's strongest voices presenting a new perspective. I really enjoyed this perspective on HM and his life.

At first I couldn't figure out what was going on and it was hard to figure out where I could stop since there are no chapters. After I got into the cadence of the story I discovered I really liked it. There are times in our lives when we feel we can only observe, and not participate, and this seems to capture what that feels like.

Remind me next time I try to read an Eighth Doctor novel to get my hands on the first one first. *grin* I picked up this one because I loved the idea of Eight encountering Harry and/or Sarah Jane, but so much was going on with the Doctor that was clearly set up in previous novels that it was very hard to follow. I do hope to return to it, though, if/when I can back up and read things in order. *grin*

Absolutely brilliant, and one of the best endings in popular fiction. I actually had to read this and Frankenstein for class, and couldn't believe my luck - I enjoyed both books immensely.=)
