Personally, I couldn't put this one down. It really sucked me in. Not sure about the ending....that's all I'm saying!

8-08: Connie Willis was the guest of honor at this year's Comic Con, and she said this was her favorite book to write because she got to spend time complaining about all the things she hates. Not entirely surprising (I bet she put a lot of herself into Miracle, as well), but I think she might be a little too pessimistic and bitchy for my tastes, then. Oh, well - I still love her books and even this one. *g* This time around, Management really cracked me up because I recognized shades of co-workers. I skim some e-mails and feel it's like they're handed down from Management. Way to nail it, Connie! I also appreciated the slow build up to Sandy and Bennett's relationship (and finally noticed when she switched from calling him Bennett to Ben) and the fact that the entire book is structured like the chaos experiment that ties the entire book together at the end. Awesome. 5-07: It's almost hard to call this sci-fi. Still, very interesting. There aren't many books about curmudgeonly statisticians out there.

Mr Palahniuk sounds like a 13 year old pot head that takes himself too seriously. This book was total crap, the author tried to create this dark atmosphere, this anti-culture that is only knee-deep. It's like reading an agressive Céline without the intellectual capacity to write or actually see anything. Fight Club is a book that may appeal to teenagers, but not to anyone that actually enjoys a piece of art. Fight Club is not literature, it does not SAY anything, it does not MEAN anything, not that it has to and if it didn't have to you would expect the prose to be worthwile. But no, it is just total crap. Read it with an open mind and you'll see what I mean.

can i comment on this book without using the word "quirky" to describe alice? i guess not ... i remember checking this book out from the library, then losing it behind the bed, not very long after it came out. i found it - happiy - but returned unread. but, after reading another susan juby book, i decided to give it - and potentially the rest of the series - another go. i'm quite glad i did. it's breezy and funny and i do think that alice is a great character that i look forward to spending more time with. bonus canadian points.

Poetic... love of the land, the desert. Very short and delightful.

Like most of Hesse's work, this is a story of self insight and the pursuit of happiness. It is the story of the Steppenwolf, a lonely character wandering aimlessly through life, never finding true joy. It contains Hesse's eastern tinged as seen in Siddartha, a book Steppenwolf is very similiar to. The slowly moving plot of the novel explodes wonderfully in a psychedelic-infused exploration of the Stepenwolf's psyche.

Great read, makes me want to learn more about the era - I'm excited to see both movies on the subject out this year!

Funny in places--a very repellent protagonist, though.
