Upon my listening betimes of recent BBC Radio Four broadcast of Mr. Pepys diary twas I given of a mind to read this book. God's teeth, tis a most pleasing selection of entries, methinks a handsome view thereof past seventeenth century worlde that is true enough in a great degree. Mr Pepys was an irascible rogue. Flirting with the women folk during the church services. Giving the wife a black eye or towsing the servant. We are privilaged indeed to gain such an intimate view into the mechanics of the Stuart ship of state and the social world of London in this period. This is the world where swallows hibernate under water and the cup of tee was just introduced into the country. A world scourged by plague and fire. My favourite though, "At noon to my Lord Crewes-where one Mr.Templer, an ingenious man and a person of honour he seems to be dined; and discoursing the nature of serpents, he told us of some that in the waste places of Lancashire do grow to a great bigness, and that do feed upon larkes, which they take thus- they observe when the lark is soared to the highest, and do crawle till they come to be just underneath them; and there they place themselfs with their mouths uppermost, and there (as is conceived) they do eject poyson up to the bird; for the bird doth suddenly come down again in its course of a circle, and falls directly into the mouth of the serpent-which is very strange." Far out is a term that comes to mind.
