I haven't read the Twilight books, so I don't know how similar this one is. I like the historical edge this has, though it gets a little too close to bodice-ripping for my taste. It was longer than I thought it would be, though did race right along, I'll give it that. I stayed up really late to finish it. It was a fair investment in time, though. Apparently this is the first of a several-part story, so I suppose I have to excuse the cliff-hanger ending. My question is whether I'll still care what happens when the next edition comes out?

The bizarre, non sequitur title was inspired from a shared joke between Kerouac and Burroughs about a circus fire that they overheard on the radio after a Nazi bombing campaign in Great Britain...and it couldn't be more appropriate. The naivete of these characters is what truly drew me in. Their reactions to death and war are illogically flippant...an attestation towards their mindsets at the time. Yet these events must have had great impact upon them as their writing careers flourished, representing an island of harsh mortality in a sea of bohemian self-indulgence. And with the knowledge of their later works, it gives the book a little more weight. This is by no means a great magnum opus of either author; you must remember that a decade passed before either became well-known novelists ("On the Road" 1957, and "Naked Lunch" 1959) But what it lacks for in beauty of prose and cerebral conclusions, it more than makes up for its unflinching insight int the beat lifestyle of the East Village during World War II; the type of writing that borders on Gonzo journalism. I recommend it to anyone interested beat history. And I also suggest you read the editors incorrectly labeled "Afterword" first. It gives some framework to read the book in a more objective light.

Despite a tendency to be a bit hysterical, and an odd drifting toward eastern mysticism, I found the details he marshaled to be persuasive. Of course, as an atheist, I am the choir that he is preaching to. But there lies the problem: virtually no theist---the group that most needs to grapple with this book---is going to walk away from this book smacking their forehead and saying "Oh, I was so wrong!" They won't even be reading the book. Like with the recent Dawkins book and so on, it is encouraging to know that there is a market for these ideas. The wider they spread, the better for our culture. It is still disheartening to realize that in this age wonders we live in, reason---the only tool we have for asymptotically approaching truth---has to be sold to the public at large.

Great writing AND a great story. Adventure, intrigue, character development. This book has it all. I also appreciated the spiritual undertones in this book. Nothing too obvious and in your face, but definitely there, asking the big questions.

I have read this book a couple times and always enjoy it and the way Willa Cather writes.
I don't know anyone who was able to get through this book.
I must be a little kid because I really enjoy Juvenile Fiction. I loved this book, it was entertaining and interesting. I can't wait to read the other books.

Good cop mystery written well. Quick read, interesting characters and doesn't get bogged down once you get into the story. Vermont cop becomes sympathetic, girlfriend grows strong, and police brass have some humanity and understanding.

Pascal has caused atheists to doubt their atheism more often than Nietzsche has theists their theism - why? Because those that let their hearts guide their thoughts are never in doubt, but those who unwisely look to results to guide them, as macho ubermensches perforce exclusively must, are always finding their conviction to be as slippery as the passing moment (no one result ever convinces the result-minded). Recognizing this, Pascal places a weighty emphasis on the heart and the nature of its law, which is ultimately inscrutable but much less so than the world around us; he hauntingly chastises our placing undue emphasis on rationality, saying "Contradiction is no more an indication of falsehood than lack of it an indication of truth." Yeah! Pascal - the master dialectician. Indeed, so masterful is Pascal, one truly cannot believe an atheist sincere if s/he has not read him; at least I cannot, for the thought contained here remains, for science has done nothing to weaken its impact, the epitome of profundity.
