Highly recommend to anyone who enjoyed The Kite Runner or who is interested in understanding the culture of Afghanistan and the events of the past few decades in an incredibly engaging narrative.

Wow. This book is a little tricky. Witch, you say? Hm. Either way, I was dying. I needed to know what the heck was going on, even though it started off fairly slow. I really wanted to shake my book for answers, but that wouldn't work... Anyway! I did really like Gretchen. Sometimes the "OMG MY SISTER DIED" thing got a little overwhelming because I never went through anything like that. Clearly, it can dominate your life. Unlike Sisters Red, this was more of a mystery that did climax extremely well. It was very intense at that point, and I was like "Noooo...so much...dying and injury and kill that...witch, Gretchen!" And I was pretty thrilled when I connected (view spoiler) I did like Samuel and Gretchen together, hooray! He is a very um...rough around the edges kind of person, but I thought he was pretty good for her. She could handle it. It was good, and I am sooo excited for the next one!

Warren frowned. 'Surely the public assistance rates aren't so bad as that? They're revised from time to time, aren't they? You don't just have to starve?' She shook her head. 'No, you don't have to starve. The rates are all right--in theory, Mr. Warren. You can keep alive and fit on P.A.C. relief--if you happen to have been born an archangel.' 'What do you mean?' She stopped and faced him. 'It's like this. There's really nothing wrong with the rates of relief. If you are careful, and wise, and prudent, you can live on that amount of money fairly well. And you've got to be intelligent, and well educated, too, and rather selfish. If you were like that you'd get along all right--but you wouldn't have a penny to spare.' She paused. 'But if you were human--well, you'd be for it. If you got bored stiff with doing nothing so that you went and blued fourpence on going to the pictures--you just wouldn't have enough to eat that week. Or if you couldn't cook very well, and spoiled the food a bit, you'd go hungry. You'd go hungry if your wife had a birthday and you wanted to give her a little present costing a bob--you'd only get eighty percent of your food that week. And of course, if your wife gets ill and you want to buy her little fancy bits of things...' (72-3). 'I had time to think about all this when I was here in hospital. I was right away from it then, able to see my job from the outside. And it seemed to me then, as it does now, that there's only one thing really worth working for in the City. That's to create work. 'I don't know if you've ever thought about machines,' he said. 'Every machine that's put into a factory displaces labour. That's a very old story, of course. The man who's put to work the machine isn't any better off than he was before; the three men that are thrown out of a job are very much worse off....The cure is for somebody to buckle to and make a job for the three men. 'I believe that that's the thing most worth doing in this modern world,' he said quietly. 'To create jobs that men can work at, and be proud of, and make money by their work. There's no dignity, no decency, or health today for men that haven't got a job. All other things depend on work today: without work men are utterly undone' (167).

This book is built from a long, beautiful poem about farm life enhanced by adorable and engaging illustrations. It's been a favorite with my kids forever. Both of them had it mostly memorized by the age of 2 1/2, and we take turns reciting it together. The author has a solid understanding of what will hold a child's interest, and a good instinct for language.

So I borrowed this book from Yuka sometime in 2006, and I started it, hoping it would tip my love/exasperation relationship with Kelly Link's writing. Then it sort of got lost in a pile of school books and other books. I picked it up again recently because I really ought to return it to Yuka. I flipped through it to figure out where I left off, and started right after the story "Some Zombie Contingency Plans," thinking, "ah yes, I remember reading the one about zombies." I proceeded to read the first of the last two stories in the book, and, when I finished that story, idly flip through the rest of the book and realize I had actually only read three of the nine stories in the book (and one, "The Great Divorce," only because it was in One Story, which is what got me interested in Link in the first place). My confusion was caused by the fact that this book has (at least) two stories about zombies. I guess I'll have to report back later about whether this is as awesome as it sounds.
A moving, sparkling book. Maybe it's because I know the author, and could hear her voice in the book, but I was deeply moved by it. Her text has genuine, searing insight and the combination of multiple cultures and generations is beautiful. It also got me interested in learning more about Chinese culture, and Tang poetry. Anyone who has ever lived abroad, or even known someone from a very different culture, can especially appreciate many things about this book, aside from the pure plot points. One of my favorite humorous parts is when the main character doesn't know the word for "doorknob" in Chinese, because it reminds me of trying to buy a hole puncher when I lived in Paris. I ended up asking the man at the stationery store for "the thing that makes the holes in the paper"!

This book provides a snapshot of contemporary practice across the arts, highlighting what is and has been important and relevant in different genres. It covers a range of artforms including tivaevae, tatau, tapa, weaving, film and photography, painting and sculpture, architecture, theatre, literature, costume, jewellery, music and dance. Pacific Art Niu Sila shows how these artforms have maintained long-established ideas and have incorporated and been transformed by new ones. It is essential reading for all those interested in the contemporary arts of both New Zealand and the Pacific.

A fitting end to the Millennium trilogy and my favorite book in the series, without giving anything away, Hornet's Nest picks up exactly where The Girl Who Played With Fire left off. This can be a bit confusing since in the US we've had to a wait almost a full year for the final installment and it's tough to remember the events of the second book in detail. Once this book gets moving though, it's pretty tough to put it down. My main problem with all three books has been that there just isn't enough Salander time, but I've come to appreciate the fact that her character appears just enough to keep her interesting without detracting from the overall stories being told. Too much Salander would be a bad thing. I'd give this book 5 stars, but I'm finding it hard to figure Stieg Larsson out. He's obviously someone who is against violence towards women, but on the other hand, he has no problem exploiting his female characters by putting them through horrible scenes of torture, rape, etc. to write his stories. I'm guessing we'll never get to read what there is of book 4 (or is it book 5 as some have speculated?) that happens to be sitting on a computer in Sweden, held in legal turmoil, but again, I think Hornet's Nest (or Hornets' Nest if you're British apparently) serves as a great send off two amazing characters that will be sorely missed. I'm now eagerly awaiting the translation of the third Johan Theorin novel. What exactly are they putting in the water in Sweden that makes their crime fiction so darn good?
