Didn't finish this one. Not terrible, but more mediocre than the one before, which was more mediocre than the one before that...

read (skimmed a lot) this in preparation for pd this year . . it's a little frustrating at times how educators will take something that's basic common sense, pretend that they're the first to discover/emphasize it, add some buzzwords and *viola* an "approach" that can make money . . everything in this book makes sense, but as an "approach" comes across as pretty touchy-feely and/or psychobabbly . . not sure how it'll get implemented in my school, but we'll see . . i also thought it was cute that the authors somehow thought they invented the word "positivity" . . what guys, no google? . . and that they had the audacity to claim "no bullying" in such-and-such a school due to their approach . . sorry, but bullying is often so low-key that you wouldn't know it's happening, and it happens in every school . . that last claim, btw, is symptomatic of the book's general lack of data backing their approach in general . . except for the couple schools connected to the authors that "champion" it . . . all that being said, the general ideas are good and there are some places with legitimately good/inspiring writing . . including the two-page spread on 68-69, which is a nice goal for students, teachers, humans in general . .

Slow to get started, and lots of characters that were a bit hard to keep straight. But the suspense builds and it gets better as it goes along. Interesting for folks who know Berlin and like German post-war literature.

With THREE WEEKS WITH MY BROTHER, Sparks not only provides interesting insight into the challenges, setbacks, and triumphs associated with being a successful writer, he also provides a very revealing personal account of what it is like to have to manage the untimely loss, through accident and disease, of loved ones. I was less interested in reading about his around the world travels with his brother, however. It seemed that Sparks was less interested in writing about them as well, because the travel sections seemed more superficially written than the more personal accounts of his life growing up and his relationship with his family. Overall, though, it is a worthy read.

A fast moving political satire a la Thank You For Smoking (one of Buckley's previous novels), the narrative speeds forward with no scene lasting more than a few pages. Within these scenes we meet a humorous band of characters and the movement from scene to scene keeps the story fresh. The main plot involves retirees being given an innovate incentive to save a failing social security system. Most of all I liked how current all the satire was in this book, parodying events in politics that have happened since Bush's 2nd term.

Oh I actually liked this book! Sure, it's a bit clichéd and obvious, but hey - it was good! One thing that frustrated me a bit - I kept comparing it to Twilight in the beginning. I'm not sure if there are any real examples of similarities, but there was a whole Edwardy vibe I was getting with Dante, and many scenes were reminding me of that book. I'm pretty sure I'm just going crazy, though - it's not like Twilight at all. I feel like Renee's attraction to dead things is forgotten in the bulk of the book. In the beginning they talk about it, and then they only come back to it when they discuss Monitors. I feel it needed more attention - it's an important part, right? The ending (very ending) also felt a bit rushed, with everything that happened. Sweet, but rushed. Speaking of the ending (the whole thing this time), Yvonne Woon did well with it! She tied up most of the loose ends and wraps everything up perfectly. She introduces many problems, and everything actually worked out (as in, the answers made sense and all connected). Sure, there were almost too many complications, but that's fun part about writing - solving an unsolvable problem! I say that this is a good romance. For those of us who liked the vampire idea (I keep coming back to this) except got tired of the actual vampires, here you go! I wonder if the mythology was real in this - it was fresh and new! Not to mention good!
