Uggh. This was bad. Perhaps notable for trying to deal with homophobia in a book that tries to be shocking every few pages. But that's about it.
I ended up liking this much more than the first book. Chess is still a remarkably flawed character but I felt wholly sympathetic to her, even her worst flaws. And while in the first book it took me a long time to get on the Terrible bandwagon, I'm now very firmly a fan. Poor Terrible. I'm still hopeful they can work things out (hopefully in the next book? Nobody tell me, I don't want spoilers) and I was a little mad at how mean he was to Chess after he found out the truth, but then again I could understand why he was lashing out giving the level of betrayal he felt (and she really shouldn't have gone over to Lex's right after that scene on the roof. Even I was mad at her about that). I liked the mystery in this book better than the first as well; it just felt a little more solid and well-plotted (not that the first one wasn't. This one just felt like an improvement on the first which is always a good thing in a series). While after reading the first book I was kinda iffy on whether I wanted to dive into the rest of the series, Unholy Magic has sold me. If only I didn't have so many other books to read, too. City of Ghosts, I'll get to you soon (please don't make me cry).
This book reminded me of The Thirteenth Tale - an older woman recounting the tales that took place in an old house. This book starts around the time of World War I. The narrator, Grace, is a housemaid at Riverton as her mother was before her and tells the tale of the Ashbury family. A really interesting tale and mystery that unfolds.

I am speechless! A great book on new age and consciousness.
Structured in the shape of a mushroom cloud, the shot heard round the world to ultimate dissolution. Follow the bouncing baseball . . .

If you're an anarchist I'd say you should read this, regardless of your location. It contains both celebration and critique from author to author, with much that is good to think about for those identified in however loose a way with that strand of the movement. I'm still wrapping my head around what it offers to others and how much it deepens understanding of the crisis in the wider context or how that might be important for other geographies, but it certainly does offer a great deal for reflection. Still, I am finding it very hard to rate. I have to review this elsewhere and 'officially' so I'm just mulling it over, but I enjoyed it.
First round in March 2011

I also like this book. It brings another prospective idea that the world hasn't experienced. The banning of certain books. The idea of banning books suspends peoples thoughts and keeps people a certain way.
