I described this book as being "so good it hurt my brain". MATING is the thoughtful depiction of "girl meets boy" in Botswana and then scrupulously analyzed over the course of 470+ pages. It's funny when you think about it; women analyze everything anyhow, but in this case the protagonist is an anthropologist, and does it more clearly, more thoughtfully. She's still overanalyzing, but academically, which makes it fun. There were millions of lines I wanted to underline as I read. Not to mention words I should probably look up. Ultimately, though, I was amazed at how Rush comfortably climbed into the skin of a woman in her 30s. He spends the novel creating such distinct characters, but drawing your picture of them through how they thought more than anything they did or looked like. There is so much to enjoy here, but reading it is a labor of love- this isn't a beach read but something that requires your focus. You'll feel accomplished when you put it down. A stellar novel.

I love sci-fi, and this book is one of the only reasons why I still think that Stephenie Meyer is an okay author. I really liked it, but it seemed out of character for its author.

TOKYO HEIST by Diana Renn is filled with gorgeous prose, intrigue, and adventure. It also made me long for Japan so deeply, I may just have to charge Renn for the cost of a plane ticket to Tokyo. ;) Violet, a budding teenage Manga artist, goes to Japan with her artist dad and takes on the search of a lifetime—on the surface, for a missing Van Gogh, but also for her father’s affection and her inner-chikara (personal power). I loved the way Renn interweaved the story in Violet’s comic Kimono Girl with the plot of the real-life mystery. And the places where Violet “thinks” in manga are both compelling and unique. “A thought bubble explodes above my head. Asterisks, number signs, ampersands, and exclamation points shoot off in every direction.” TOKYO HEIST is an exciting, page-turner and a breath of fresh air from the typical YA fare. A definite must-read!

I just finished the book and I would definitely read another book by this author. The book was really interesting from a historical perspective, especially since it is about international terrorism and was written before 9/11. It gives an interesting look at what we thought the dangers were at that time. Also the storyline moved well and kept my attention and the characters were great.
