Good book! A Private school is haunted by Gus Pierce who died there - Abel, Betsy and Carlin try to understand why. The town folk and the school folk usually do not interact, but there is crossover here to solve the death. I love the magical reality that Alice Hoffman uses in her novels, each one is a delightful surprise.

Who doesn't want to read about a person who has souls in their head?(Shout out to Wanderer, she's my original soul BFF). Okay, I won't lie, the hot boy on the cover caught my attention too--but really can you blame me? This book had a lot of potential and I wanted to get my creepy tiny hands all over it. Starting off with a great zombie action sequence completely hooking me to the storyline making me have my phone attached to my hands for two days to and from work while on the bus. The story was a great read and so packed with information, it was almost tiring. We had witches, faeries, zombies, vampires, werewolves, even people who go "omnomnom" on your face! It got to a point where I just had no idea where the book was going. I just stopped trying to figure it out because there was way too much going on. It's like the author wanted to write five books and was like, "Oh hey, I'll just put everything in these three hundred pages and see where we end up." Now we have the characters. We had our good, our bad and our look at me; I'm so hardcore. There are a few relationships in this book and though cute, they all felt incredibly undeveloped and rushed. A lot of the storyline seemed to be written because it was convenient to the storyline, but not actually needed. I know it doesn't sound like it, but I did actually enjoy the story. I look forward to eventually reading the second and third one, but as a stand alone, this book was too congested. I would've preferred the book to focus on the main story of Mary-Ann and the souls, not bring in a bunch of stories and put that one on the back burner for the majority of the book. I understand the author may have wanted to set-up for further books, but I think it could've been done in a better way.

This story is told similar to the Kiterunner, but is morer humorous in its telling because the narrator and hero of the book is 90 or 93 as he keeps saying.. its a love story/adventure/coming of age/history book.. its set in the great depression era and really captures the difficulties of that period compounded with the dangerous/exciting life of the circus..would highly recommend it.

This was surprisingly a good book. Very cute and rather comical. I enjoyed the way the author portrayed the awkward situations, as well as the way she portrayed the faith of the book's characters.

For what its worth, I would give this 3 1/2 stars if I could. The book is strange, almost something you expect to see in the waiting room of a hospice or something you would want to give to children to teach them about death in a saccharin way. But the book is actually better than that, and definitely a worthwhile read. I liked the author's short, easy-to-read style so much, I later read Tuesday's with Morrie, although I liked this book better.

Nora ist Künstlerin, sie arbeitet am liebsten mit Glas und ist sich dabei ihrer Abstammung bewußt, sie ist eine Nachfahrin eines der bekanntesten Glasbläsers von Murano. Nach ihrer Scheidung beschließt sie, nach Venedig zu gehen und sich als Glasbläserin auf Murano zu bewerben. Sie beginnt Nachforschungen über ihnen Vorfahren anzustellen und ist fasziniert von seiner Geschichte. Parallel dazu wird die Geschichte ihres Vorfahren im 17. Jahrhundert erzählt. Corradino lebt mit den anderen Glasbläsern auf der kleinen Insel Murano, der Rat der Stadt Venedig, verteidigt den Schatz des Wissens über das weltberühmte Murano Glas und dessen Herstellung so vehement, dass die Glasbläser die Insel nicht verlassen dürfen und wie Gefangene gehalten werden. Corradino darf dank seiner Ausnahmestellung hin und wieder nach Venedig übersetzen, um dort zu arbeiten, er spürt aber immer Spione in seinem Nacken, die ihn beobachten und etwaige Fehltritte sofort melden würden. Eines Tages beschließt er zu fliehen. Das Buch hatte einige Zeit auf meinem SUB geschlummert und ich bin froh, dass ich es vorgekramt habe. Sowohl die Geschichte von Corradino als auch die von Nora sind recht spannend und gut miteinander verwoben (vielleicht ein bisschen zu gut, nach einem Kapitel über die Friedhofsinsel, die Nora besucht, spielt auch das folgende Kapitel mit Corradino dort, hin und wieder recht nett, aber auf die Dauer etwas zu "gewollt".). Was mir nicht so gut gefallen hat, ist die Art, wie den Geschichten schon viel vorweggenommen wird, so weiß man im ersten Kapitel wie Corradino stirbt, was später einiges an Spannung nimmt, auch wenn der Mord an ihm, mit einem Glasdolch, den er selbst gefertigt hat ein spannender Auftakt ist. Die Geschichten plätschern nett und flüssig daher, aber so richtig spannend wird es nie. Die Protagonisten sind durchaus sympathisch und man ist gespannt, was als nächstes passiert. Was das Buch für mich wirklich lesenswert gemacht hat, war die Geschichte der Glasbläser und von Murano. Venedig wird wunderbar beschrieben, sowohl "damals" als auch "heute", man hatte wirklich das Gefühl dort zu sein und die Kanäle plätschern zu hören.

I bought this book from the Salvation Army because I had seen the movie, couldn't remember it, but did remember that John Cusack was in it. And if he was in it, it's got to be quality, right? Anyway, upon reading, it was. A really interesting and fun portrayal of Savannah, I'm sure fact and fiction crossed back and forth with each other, but whatever the case, the writing was poetic when it needed to be, and straight-forward when it needed to be, creating a book that was a pleasure to read and difficult to put down. Also, it made me wish I was part of a family of Southern Aristocracy so I could look down on other people more. As it is, I can only look down on people who smell worse than me. And with all the traveling I've been doing recently, that's not many people.
