The story is about Landon Carter who remembers the last year of his high school in 1958. The setting takes place at a small town located at North Carolina. However, the real plot of the story is that Landon would have never consider dating Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the chruch minister, because of her too plainess and how she different she was from the teenagers around her. But over time and several ordeals, he does fall in with her, but the real problem hasn't yet to start from there... On the technical side of things, the writing of the book is entertaining. The novel is written on first person, and thus, you're reading the book through the main character's thinking process; because of this, it's very easy to relate to the main character. Little nitpicks that I have is that it can be very repetitive with little phrases (such as 'if you know what I mean' which I swear that it's been repeated more than it should have.) Things like these can be avoidable, so it's annoying to see tedious text. Besides that, I don't really have much to pick on. As for the plot, as much as I ADORE this book close to my heart, I can consider this to be a "chick's flick" as other people have commented it. The novel is girly and predictable--the guy thinks he wouldn't fall the girl, he does fall the girl, he changes for her, and they get together. But the plot is more than just falling in love. In fact, many of the book's theme include religion, and how doing "the right thing" is indeed "the right thing." And the problems the characters go through does its job hinting of what has yet to come later in the book. Yes, there will be handfuls of preaching, especially in the ending, but there isn't so much that will make you roll your eyes. The characters are likable. The main character, Landon, is very a relateable person as I've previously stated. He doesn't get the best grades, nor is he the most popular guy around. He's realistic; he's very flawed but human that it's easy to step inside his shoes. He's also the kind of guy that all the girls go, "Awww why can't there be more guys like him" kind of tone. (Yes, even I even felt that way--don't laugh.) However the leading lady, Jamie, is the "too good to be true" character (which I would use the term "Mary-Sue" at this point), but yet she is. Jamie is honestly a nice person who does good deeds without being asked, and she would part take in committees, visit orphanages, help wounded animals, you name it. It also doesn't help that she has excellent GPA score. (Dang, since when does this girl have all the time to do so?) Her character is just too perfect, but in her defense, she still gets her feelings hurt and personal problems to go through. In such way, hating such a character would make anyone, as Landon would say, "look bad." There really isn't much to comment on the supporting cast besides they're there to support the main characters; the cast worked out well, although some are pretty much stereotypical--with the exception of Jamie's father. Jamie's father, Hegbert Sullivan, is the church minister of the small town; he loves his daughter and has went through several tragics in his life time such as losing his wife due to the birth of Jamie. All in all, this story is a sweet, heart breaking tale. The writing is humrous and heart warming, and the characters do developed throughout the story. The book does get the job done to entertain. Unfortunately, you can pretty much tell what's going to happen very early in the game, and if you're the kind of person who does not like predictability (let alone girly fluff), this book isn't for you. This book also reference heavily on Christianity, and there will be preaching one way or another. I give A Walk to Remember three "if-you-know-what-I-mean" stars out of five. :D (Derp derp, JO reference) If I were to rate it as something that I personally like, I'd give it five stars because I'm lame like that. :P) P.S. If I had to choose the book or the movie, I'd go with the movie because I love Mandy Moore. :P Actually, I have more reasons, but I won't go in further detail on that now.
