It's quirky, witty, and clever and most of it I enjoyed. But it was also REALLY long and somewhat sluggish in parts. Its biggest flaw was that although the characters were interesting, I didn't feel very attached to them or feel like I really knew most of them very well...even the main character. The logic of some aspects also bothers me a bit in that they didn't appear to follow the rules of the game as laid out, but I suppose in an apocalyptic novel some things get chalked up to "mysterious ways". In the end, I'm glad I read it, but I wish it had moved more quickly.

Lots of facts! Paints a vivid picture of the hardships of life at that time. Wish there was more of a "story" with the facts.

i might have to read this book again. it's definitely a page-turner, or maybe i'm just easy--i do get caught up in a good plot and miss a lot of the language and literary tricks. when this first came out, an acquaintance read it and said he was really disappointed; i wasn't surprised since it seems many authors experience a 2nd-book slump. in any case, i thought this book was not as subtle as everything is illuminated, but it was quite moving, considering the subject, and beautiful in it's own way. the inclusion of graphics and images put me off at first--of course before i read it. they do serve to inform the book and give it a third dimension, a little like the people of paper,. for a post 9/11 book that deals directly with the topic, it's extremely sensitive; i think by telling the story as it pertains to one person--or, group of people--helped to create the necessary distance for such a horrendous event--at least for me, as a reader. i can't think of a big finish, here, so i'll say it was definitely worth the time and i'm looking forward to foer's next effort.

So.... this is a tough one cause it's dedicated to my cousin and it tells the fictional version of the story of his drowning in the sound off Falmouth, Cape Cod. It's cathartic, therapeutic and devastatingly accurate in describing the ways that teenagers cope with tragic loss... but, as literature, it's weak. The Murphy bros sure can evoke the Cape, though... wow.

Waay back in the mid-seventies I spent a long weekend touring the Arkansas Ozarks. I'd never seen such abject poverty in my life! In WINTER'S BONE, Weedrell flawlessly captures what the place is like. Recently, I read BLOODROOT which gave a view into life in the mountains and hollers of Appalachia, but this book made that one look like a picnic on a summer's day. It was cold, raw and violent. So, why read it? The author writes SO well! His sentences are amazing and his descriptions come from someone who knows of what he speaks. This is a tough read to take, but it was worth it!

Where to begin? This book breaks literary rules but is riveting, powerful and true. A great read.

Really hope there isn't going to be a love triangle going on with Creede, Bruno, and Graves. Bruno had his chance and screwed up multiple times.

I don't know if I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did had it not be been based on Laura Bush. During the entire book, I could picture Laura's and George's faces on the characters, which made the reading quite an experience. And fiction or not, I now have a huge respect and admiration for Laura Bush. Couldn't put it down.

This book is a page turner from page 1. I don't read very much, so for me to say that means a lot. ENJOY

I wish the cover looked like this when I read it at 13 years old.
