This book was very interesting. I had no idea of the history of blackwater nor the other mercenary armys at work in service of the USA (and other govts). It was eye opening and interesting, driving through the moyock each year... has a new meaning to me now.

I'd have to say the book is highly over-rated compared to what folks are saying here. It's not a bad book. But I can think of some paranormal romance authors ten times better (and no, I am NOT referring to Twilight-trash). ANYTHING is better than that ilk. *Shrug* I've read worse, I've read better - this book is just kinda...mediocre. Technically, she's okay. The entire thing though very much has the feel of a Mary Sue and predictable. Author would have done better to write actual flashbacks rather then narratives when the character is remembering her past. After all, they are MEMORIES. There's no real connection to the events for the reader otherwise. The main character seems a little immature for her supposed great age; of which we never really get any indication except in very broad generalities. And the universe itself seems a little thin and weakly propped up. A thin facade of evil to go against the status-quo of vampires or angels fic -- but it comes off as a pretty weak evil. If they represent the bad side between the fight of good/evil, angels/demons, I don't think anyone has anything to worry about. Author seemed afraid to make her character more evil, afraid it would make the character unlikable or alienate her readers. But she CHOSE to make the main character a demon. So in the end, it feels like she cheapened, or water-downed the whole demon/side of Satan premise. The sex is a little lack-luster; especially seeing how it's all with anyone BUT the guy she has an real emotional connection with. Instead, she goes with lust. And yeah, she's a succubus. But as it is, the sex comes off a little....sleezy. Quickies to satisfy a little lust or hunger; not very fulfilling and anything to write home about. I'd pick up this book for a Saturday quickie if you're between books of some of the more prolific paranormal romance authors -- it'll pass the time. But don't expect to be blown away.

I can't believe this only has three stars - that's like giving giving the foundation of your house three stars. Joy might not be the most exciting cookbook, but I use it almost daily, not only for recipies but just for everything I need to know about food. How should I store beets? How many teaspoons are in a cup? What exactly constitutes "three medium potatoes? I want to thicken my soup, but I'm out of cornstarch. I've got potatoes and leeks and want to make soup, do I need anything else? Every kitchen needs a copy of this book; you might spend more time showing guests the new rec-room than showing off the foundation, but its there and it makes everything else work.

This is a great book. It neatly and concisely organizes 9 principles of cognitive science into narratives relevant for education (or conceivably for general interest about how the mind works). It wisely sticks to the "consensus" stuff, of which there is tragically little in education.

A follow up to Daphne du Maurier's classic, Rebecca. Mrs. de Winters, however, falls short of everything. It just isn't compelling enough to read other than to find out what happens to the de Winters after Rebecca . I can't even remember much of the plot. Plus the characters seem dry and tired, as if all that they want to do is rest and be forgotten.
