Read it twice in college. Probably not going to read it again.

Oh my. What can I say? This book is like the most perfect thing in the world. It's set in Paris. It has a hot boy. It has a smart girl. It has funnyness. It features Shakespeare & Co, and Macarons. Yeah, it's a love story, and it's a little idealistic, but that's what makes it good. It gives you a warm feeling, and makes you think, "maybe someday this will happen to me." But it doesn't really make you long for love or anything, it just makes you...hopeful. And to focus only on the love story in this book is to ignore some of the best bits: the friendships, the funny, madcap stuff that happens, the Paris adventures. It's so much more than just romance. I mean, really. This book couldn't be any better if it tried. I really can't say anything else. Just, if you're reading this random review for some reason and you haven't read this book, GO NOW and read it. Seriously. Why are you still reading this review? GET UP AND GO.

I love Spinelli, but I'm not a huge fan of this book. The "don't follow the crowd" theme is common in his work, but I think he does it MUCH better in Stargirl.

I can never decide how I feel on the "is this true in spirit even if it isn't her completely true experience?" issue. It's kind of like reading the Bible--you have to be able to accept that truth, oddly enough, has a bit of gray to it. I was deeply affected by Menchu's tale, I will say that much. I simply wish she had thrown a disclaimer in there somewhere ("Okay, okay, not all of this happened to me, but be sure that everything in here happened to someone. The brutality is true, even if the details aren't"). Aside from that, it must be said that I found the writing less than extraordinary at points, but I still learned quite a bit.
Seeing Willow in the theaters when I was ten was another landmark event for me. This was a movie that proved to me that imaginative, creative films could be made that really made you feel like the magic was actually taking place on screen. On top of that, the story was actually pretty decent (although Lucas had already had a shot at very similar stories in the Ewok Adventure movies, so he'd had plenty of practice perfecting the formula). Reading Wayland Drew's novelization later that summer only made me hungrier for more, since the book included incidents and trivia that had been cut from the movie. So it was that when I learned Willow would be continued in a follow-up series of books, I was ecstatic. Until I read the second chapter. After the second chapter, it took me most of the rest of the book to forgive George Lucas and Chris Claremont (of X-Men fame). Nevertheless, this book stands as one of the most enjoyable fantasy stories I've read in a long time, and I've since returned to the series a few times. Definitely worth the few hours it will take to read through.

Strong writing. It's about family, culture, tradition and how we all adopt to our surroundings. Jumpha Lahiri really gets into the family, it's really honest. It's really intresting the way she shows the shame we can feel from a family as we are learning to grow in our own skin. I don't think shame is the entirerly right word. Maybe embarrasement at times.

Not as good as the first book, but really good fun, still with the same sharp sense of humour. This time Jazz and Vayl are after a Chinese vampire, that has gotten his hands on one of Bergmans inventions - a suit of armour, which can shoot poisioned spines and breath fire at you. They can only get it off him when he's dead and its designed not to let that happen. Vayl facinates me, he's so old fashioned at times (and incredibly jealous of the smallest things), he makes me smile.

i realize the protagonist is a fourteen-year-old boy, but i could have done without so many references to the kid's penis. otherwise a pretty decent read.

This is the sequel to 'the best little boy in the whole wide world' which is one of the best autobiographies about growing up gay ever. It takes the unknown author (he used a fake name with the first book) and unmaskes both his childhood self and reveals the path his adult self took. It's an amazing arch considering the books take place quite a few years apart--not in subject but in composition.
