I always feel like a huge asshole when approached by some stranger while reading a book like this in public and asked to give a plot summary. Usually, the best I can muster up is a really vague and awkward "Well, um, it's about a lot of things...". When this happened to me while reading 2666, I offered said stranger the book so he could read the back, to which he responded "So, it's a kinda detective story?". Kinda. But not really. Hell, I don't know. It's a lot of things, but narrowing it down to one of those things kinda demeans the entire book. 2666 is also just one of those books that's hard to describe without making it sound boring. Which it's totally not. At least it's usually not. Does that sound pretentious enough? It's really hard to give a book an accurate, unbiased rating, especially when the book in question is an epic, sprawling, 900-page postmodern mess. But hey, is it even possible to be unbiased while rating books? Theoretically, this is a five star book, but I felt that while the beginning and ending were fantastic, it got really annoying and boring in the middle (mainly the fourth part, which details the murders of hundreds of women in Mexico over several years). I think a mistake I make too much while reviewing books it overrating a book simply because it has a good ending. And I've definitely been tempted to do that here. But to do that here would be to ignore that fact that this 2666 got really boring in a few places. It might be a bit unforgiving considering the length of the book, but screw you it's my rating system.
