I was a little bit worried that I wouldn't like this book. See, I read Sisters Red going in thinking "Oh, I love Fairy Tale retellings! This will be awesome!" But then I spent the whole book angry at the characterization because Rosie was the victim the whole flipping time and then Scarlet was so blind to the fact that the guy who I wanna call Silas but I can't actually remember his name was totally in love with her and I was just like DJFKLA;FDJSKAL; in anger. But Sweetly didn't have the same problems, so we're good! I liked the premise a lot. Hansel and Gretel is one of those fairy tales you don't see around as often (Red Riding Hood? Beauty and the Beast? Cinderella? Yeah, they need to slow down on those retellings) and the addition of candy just makes it even sweeter (though I actually wish we could have seen a little bit more of the actual candy making processes). The family history of Ansel and Gretchen was very well developed. Their sister disappears, their family breaks down, mom dies, dad remarries, dad dies, stepmother kicks them out, was alluded to throughout the story but you didn't get the whole picture for a while, which was nice. And the town-past-its-glory-days was almost a character in itself, which in my opinion, is the role location should play in every novel. Gretchen was a very understandable character. Can I relate to having my twin sister stolen away from me and suffering survivor's guilt my entire life? No. But the way she was written made it easy to sympathize with her and cheer for her growth. Ansel seemed nice enough to me, but I don't like people who feel like they always have to fix things. Drives me crazy. Sophia was always just a little bit...off, to me. Starting with the Nietszche quote, and progressing to her insane reaction to the seashells. You find out why, but still *shivers*. I mean, I love mentally imbalanced characters, I really do. But Sophia just wasn't right. I loved the slow progression between Gretchen and Sam, because Sam has that tough guy thing that requires wearing down before you can get to his heart of gold. Overall, a successful retelling of a slightly more obscure fairy tale!
