I have to say that I thought this book lacked clarity. I've read The Sublime Object of Ideology and Looking Awry, and both of those are much easier to understand than this one. I got the feeling that there was really loose oversight during the editing process because it seemed that the chapters jumped around a lot (almost as if cut-and-paste commands were responsible, in part because I'd read similar passages in his other books). Still, I'd re-read it, especially now that I have a slightly better grasp of his Hegelian and Lacanian influences.

This month's Believer announced the end of Hornby's column, and I welcome it with open arms. Every piece of Hornby I've ever read felt like a waste of time.

This is a free book from the Goodreads First Reads giveaways! This book tackled what happens to some people after they die and become agents of a "greater good." Then the zombies entered the story and it definitely became something else. I enjoyed the concept and writing of this book, but since I'm not a zombie fan I lost of bit of interest as the book went on.

I'm really liking this book now. My sister let me go through her books at school and told me take a few that caught my interest. She teaches 7th grade English and 9th grade AP English. So far I'm liking it. At the beginning it talks about it is the year 1772 and how Jacob Adams creates figureheads for ships. Work is hard to come by and finally a client comes in and asks for a figurehead for this ship. Some how Jacob knew exactly what kind of figurehead was meant to be for the mans ship. So he makes a special one and puts in glass eyes. Who knew and why it was meant to be? Then it introduces a young girl - Vicki who is being a waitress for her fathers restaurant called Ye Old Seashell. By this time, the head of the figurehead is now hanging on the wall of the restaurant and it gives everyone the chills. I'm waiting to see what happens next. Finished book! 4/9/09

what can I say? Great book, loved it! But very hard to believe that it's based on actual events, read it and you'll see what I mean, you'll laugh out loud

I gave this five stars because as far as I'm concerned, when someone is brave enough to write about their battle with an illness like ALS, who am I to judge the quality of their words? Truth be told, her writing is great anyway. The book is set up as a set of essays, each reflecting on an aspect of her life that is affected by her diagnosis and spans just over a year. She writes not just about the diagnosis itself, but about her adjustment to her constantly-changing life and body, her experiences in the healthcare system, to her decision to have a baby, to the loss of her ability to run--one of her true joys and passion. It is a good wake-up call for those of us who might be prone to taking virtually everything in life for granted every now and then.
i had no idea what a wonderful and tenacious woman Julia Child was... i fell in love with her and Paris and wanted this book to just go on and on. what an adventurous life she led and she didnt discover her passion until she was well into her 30's. IN LOVE WITH HER WORDS, HER DRIVE, HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND HER PARIS.
