This was a more academic text than I had expected, a collation of papers into chapters. It was rich with history that Le Clezio has mined over many years of researching the native cultures of pre-Hispanic America. His take on the religio-philosophical underpinnings of those societies, whether "barbarian" or "theocratic," is realized more fully as by the novelist than by an anthropologist. Indeed I couldn't help thinking occasionally, as I read, of Carlos Castaneda.

Listening to McCalls book on CDs is amazing! Hearing English read with the appropriate sounds of the language of Botswana. They are both fun and serious and great to listen to!

This book will strike a chord (if not many more) for anyone who has has even a teeny tiny bond with their mother and/or faced a time in their life where they were explicitly ready to throw in the proverbial towel. I finished this book in one sitting and had to stop numerous times in the final chapters to (literally) pull myself together because it was that emotional of a piece. I am looking forward to reading Mitch's other books in the near future but will plan to have a few tissue boxes on standby.

As a required text for english my sophomore/junior year of high school, this book sparked my interest in reading for fun. With each storyline, I found myself unable to put Tales of the City down. I suggest this book to anyone who wants to get lost in a good book. Enjoy!

I am already a fan of John McPhee's writing, and this was another enjoyable book. My only criticism is the chapter "Five Days on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers" about canoeing along, following a course taken and written of by Henry David Thoreau. It was okay, but didn't fit with the rest of the book. Otherwise, the stories of riding with a semi driver, a barge crew, train engineers, UPS workers at the sorting center, etc. were fascinating glimpses into worlds and experiences I don't otherwise encounter. I felt pleasantly enlightened.
