In the winter of 2007 I led weekly one-hour discussions about evolution for an introductory biology class at the University of Chicago. When the course director handed me a free copy of Carl Zimmer’s book, Evolution: the Triumph of an Idea, my initial thought was “sweet! I can get paid to read about evolution.” Although I was only asked to lead discussions on the first four chapters of Evolution, I couldn’t stop reading the remainder of the book. Zimmer’s book weaves together the major evolutionary theories about natural, sexual, & kin selection, adaptation, and coevolution with fun stories about evolution—from cannibalistic spiders to the evolution of HIV and human resistance to it. This book is so easy to read and surveys many evolutionary topics that it is well worth the 5-6 hours to read it. You’ll get a digestible introduction to evolutionary theory that both non-scientists and die-hard evolutionists can appreciate. As a future evolutionary biologist I sometimes worry that my work on speciation may be too esoteric to be applied to the “real world.” Reading Evolution has proven to me that, on the contrary, evolution is fundamental to the way we understand our surrounding biodiversity, the human species, and our role in evolution today.

It's a little overwhelming to have to write something about HHGTG. I wept when I heard of Douglas Adam's sudden and very untimely death in May 2001. The man was a genius. I became even more convinced of this after reading Salmon of Doubt, which contained his last unfinished Dirk Gently novel, speeches, letters, and a lot more. It was left behind on the hard drive of his Mac computer. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. If you haven't read any Douglas Adams, this is a good place to begin- with the first book of the four (yes, four) in his trilogy. If you are a bookcrosser, you can probably appreciate one of the many words he has coined: Ballycumber (n.) One of the six half-read books lying somewhere in your bed. And, thanks to DA, I'll never look at 42 the same again.

At first I thought this book would be inspiring and informative. Although some of the statistical data was useful, overall I found this book to be stifling. As a student of web design, I found it bothersome how the authors stamped out every notion of creativity. They insult the intelligence of present-day internet users and suggest an almost "template" approach to web design. As they deconstructed sites, I found their suggestions to be petty and/or picky. For example, they suggest that every page should place the logo in the upperleft corner. Or, they would criticize wording for being "overly cutesy" or "too clever." Although I think it is important for webpages to have worthy content and logical navigation, the authors of this book regard visual appeal as something frivilous. I would challenge that the viewing public do in fact have a large visual vocabulary and are capable of consuming and understanding different visual forms. We see this in the areas of advertising and industrial design, with the success of fresh, unpredictable campaigns and product lines. I think this book provides some limited insight, but after the first 40 or so pages, the stringent guidlines become overbearing. Curiously, I wonder how Nielsen's site, useit.com, would survive a deconstruction? The site is jam-packed with words, and the space is too unified without any visual elements to break it up. I didn't have the patience to scan through it at all.
