Overall a great story, and a very quick read. Gaiman has a rich knowledge of myth and fairy tale, and he uses it well here.

I really liked this book, and actually the whole series. The cover of the book was what intruiged me, since it was generic, but I devoured these books, and got my friend hooked on them as well. They are books that once you start, you can't put down, they will have you chewing off your nails in suspense, the hair on the back of your neck standing on end, and give you the awkward romance that just makes you melt. Excellent book.

2.5 stars. I liked the basis of the story and it was executed well-enough. It bogged down around page 400 and I really wanted the story to be over, but had another 140 pages to go. That was were Iles got in to a description of 'God' for the purposes of this story. I usually think I am open enough to read novels where the beliefs are very different from mine, but this just dragged on for me. Interestingly, in his acknowledgments, Iles says, "Writing about science and philosophy in a commercial novel is problematic...." This statement helped soften the off-putting feelings I had experienced while reading the book. No graphic sex; no really graphic violence; not a lot of profanity - what there was was mostly spoken by one character who used the 'f' word many times, but that seemed to come later in the story.

** spoiler alert ** Interesting historical perspective. Best part was the Underground Railroad and how the slaves were protected and helped by both Quakers, and Union soliders. The romance part of the book was quite unbelievable and so to me ruined the story. All four Slave, quaker, confederate, union solider found their once in a lifetime special mates and knew at the precise moment of meeting this was the special one and would be forever.

Best thing learned from this book? Hitchcock gets way too much credit as seen in a dissection of the screenplay of North By Northwest. The immortal crop dusting scene is in the original screenplay by Ernest Lehman, literally shot for shot. Point being, directors more often than not are big ass credit hogs. Stupid auteur theory...

Once again a great book! It's always fun to go into Harry's world to relax.

Required reading for tower English with Mr. Coppick, but I don't remember it very well. Lucie said something to me about a "portrait of alcoholism" and even that didn't sound familiar. But I liked it enough to keep reading Hardy.

It is a great way to teach a lot about the amendments and such, but the pages break to easily.

Very simple concept. The first few chapters explain the concept and and how the book is arranged and how to use it to form programs for yourself for various goals. It might even over-explain, since it seemed to repeat itself a bit and I found myself skipping ahead rather than read another phrasing of what was already explained... mostly for the benefit of people who may not already think symbolically. Most of the book is taken up by pages of activities and the self-suggestions that could go with them. Therefore, since you won't need them all, and certainly not all at once, it's just a reference and you'll get through the book quickly once you read a few examples and then skip to the last chapter for a wrap-up. I think the self-suggestions could have been more powerful, specific, and meaningful, but I suppose that's why he encourages you to write your own. I'll be formally trying a program I'll write, myself, to get back in practice because this concept is something I did naturally for most of my life. I'm trying to get back there after a few years of reinforcing mainly negative self-suggestions after some trauma. Now I'm aware of what has been happening, and I have a tool for reversing the trend.

This is definitely one of my all-time favorite books! I think, because so much of it is based on Dickens' own life experiences, it is just so filled with emotion and realism! I allowed myself to just take my time reading this one and I enjoyed every word! I love the variety and depth of characters. There is something about almost every character that I can relate to on some level. I had watched the BBC movie of "Little Dorrit" before reading and I think that helped keep some things straight as I read. I have started watching the movie again, after reading the book, and it seems like a different movie because I am getting so much more out of it after getting all the added detail from the book. This book has made me a true Charles Dickens fan and it is definitely at the top of the list of his works as far as I'm concerned!
