I thought it'd be great to get back into everyone's favorite charming serial killer, but the book was written in a weird style and the story was a huge letdown. I was barely able to bring myself to watch the film version which was slightly more palatable, even if just to see the makeup of the guy with no eyelids. HUGELY DISAPPOINTING, and I refused to read Hannibal Rising because of it.
Easily the best in the Angel Series to date. The other two took me a little bit to get into, but I didn't have that problem with this book. An excellent read.
I'm getting myself into trouble here, reading yet another book about Italy. My appetite for this country seems to be insatiable :) How do I describe this book? The words are meant to be tasted, not merely read. The story is so beautiful, the language so full of the romantic. The descriptions of the food are enough alone to make one full. Fernando sees a woman across the piazza, falls in love with her, pursues her. She slowly falls in love with him in her middle age, ties up her life in St. Louis, and follows him to Venice where they are married. The book is not so much about their love story as it is a love story about Venice and the way it shaped her life. The imagery is lovely. The ways of the Italians, secrets that only the residents are in on, are patiently revealed, and she is slowly accepted. The story ends their time in Venice as they once again wrap up their lives and head to Tuscany.
kT sent me this book AGES ago and I finally found the sonofabitch!

This was a cute little book! I also have read "Are You Dave Gorman", "Join Me" and "Googlewhack". My favorite ideas: - sending the peanuts to the old man - pub day in honor of a friend - free box of stuff - pay for an extra game of bowling for someone - place a small ad with a compliment to the reader - giving away books - hooray for bookcrossing!

Forced read in high school. Really did not enjoy it. I might have given it a 2 or 3 star had I read it on my own without an over-analytical English teacher giving me pointless assignments but the theme itself isn't one I enjoy.
I've been curious about Jay McInerney and was really pleased to receive this book from a friend. All of the characters are not as well drawn as the male protagonist---but he is a very sympathetic character and his "search" made the book very interesting to me. The book has lots of bitter-sweet moments and I found it very satisfying and compelling.

Ape and Essence (Harper and Row, Nueva York, 1948) Ni siquiera sabía que Aldous Huxley había escrito esto.
