Not only do I love this terse, evocative, original book, I ordered it as a text for my creative writing students this semester. They loved that they could look at the book as a unified collection (not a "Whitman Sampler" of poetry), and reveled in the surreal martini recipes that accompany each father-son vignette. Check this book out-- you'll be delighted to find that each poem stands on its own, but the group has a powerful impact. Carr specializes in the energetically unified/themed poetry collection; check out all his titles.
At first I was unsure of my ability to take Bronson Pinchot seriously as a narrator, but he did surprising well. In fact, by the middle of the book I was fully vested in his voice telling me the story. It held my interest, often prompting me to dust off a few albums. What I really enjoyed about The Ballad of Bob Dylan was Epstein's choice not to include everything; not to explain everything. It was not a chronological trip through Dylan's life. The story jumped around, highlighting this place and that; this particular experience, but somehow still preserving the mystery. Allowing the reader (or the listener) to fill in the blanks. I recently reread the liner note from Blood on the Tracks, written by Pete Hamill in 1974. In it he alludes that the greatness of Dylan’s songs is found in the spaces, in what is left out and what we have to create for ourselves. I am not in any way saying this work about Dylan is on any level with what he himself created, but I do believe that Epstein tried to copy his technique. And in doing so, he captured my emotion.
great writing! Would have given it 5 but it was a little young -- I heard she grows up in each book though, so I look forward to reading the next one this weekend.

Add this to your MUST READ LIST!! A fabulous story of one woman's life from shortly before 1900 to the mid 20th century in Harrisburg, PA, and its environs. Her tale includes family drama, friendship, romance, legal & moral questions, and an in your face description of how race & class play such an important role in society, community, and politics for so many years. Enjoyable from the first page. I'm so glad this was a selection for the First United Church of Christ's Book Chat group!
Very cool bubble and animal facts!

It’s a commonality to speak of dysfunctional families, and I’d prefer to think of the Dartigan family as fragile and vulnerable. The mother would have been cold and stiff in any case, but when she is forced to live out her lonely life in occupied France, there is an added layer to their difficult life which tipped them all into tragedy. The novel moves between these World War II years and the 90s, when Framboise, the youngest Dartigan daughter and our narrator, now cooks for her small café but sees her adult life though the lens of her troubled childhood. The war years brought death to their soldier-father; the children, who barely understood the meaning of "occupied" and "Resistance" or even "Nazi," learned to trade on the black market and to long for the friendship of a particularly charismatic German. These were dangerous pastimes, and they did not end well. Through it all, their mother cooks, expressing love for her children in this singular way. They long for other expressions of love and do not love her back. But Framboise grows up to be a great cook and to finally come to terms with her youthful life, aided by her mother's recipe scrapbook and a gentle childhood friend. There are wonderful passages about food, the redemptive ingredient for the mother and the point of entry for Framboise to understand her mother. I embrace the author’s love for France and its particular culture of cuisine!

This book does an amazing job of capturing the look and feel of old cookbooks, entertaining guides, and insane craft books, but by the end the humor felt a little stale. Some of the recurring jokes aren't nearly as hilarious as Sedaris thinks they are. That said, this definitely gets five stars for the genius art direction and photography.

I loved this book. It grabbed me immediately!! I was a little disappointed in the ending. I wanted Georgia to live happily ever after!
