This book has been on my to-read list for quite a while now, finally stumbled across it in the library recently. Okay, so it's translated from its original Icelandic, so maybe that explains the sometimes rather simplistic style of short sentences, or almost run-on ones. Overall, however, this is a nice little whodunnit, with the added bonus of being based in Iceland, my #1 place I want to go visit, thus giving glimpses into a way of life, an attitude, subtly different than the "western" and "asian" views I am more familiar with. Murders are few and far between. Autopsies are not performed unless specifically required, and even then not unless permission is granted. One cool thing: how the killer's message was referred to a few times but only revealed halfway through the book One rather irritating thing: the mystery behind the gender of Marion Briem - was it necessary? Are we going to find out more about him/her in subsequent stories? Overall - certainly worth a read - Book 2 is next :-)

The hardcover is beautiful. Lots of the language is beautiful. That said, I've kind of lost interest here in the second chapter.

Maybe I was just growing tired of Terry Goodkind's writing style at this point, having listened to the series every night for the past six months, or maybe it was just the poor narration, but I found this book to be the weakest of the lot. The entire first half of the book plays out like a soap opera, going back and forth between cringe-inducing love scenes and conflict born from misunderstandings that could be avoided by any set of adults with half a brain between them. Terry Goodkind suffers from the misconception that nobody can understand subtlety, and thus explains everything to death. That being said, when the plot stopped stagnating and actually went somewhere, I found myself enjoying it and wanting more. I am holding out hope that the next book will better, more like the first and second books.

The best thing about this book is the depths Krakauer explored in researching this book. I often think that at one point in my life, I was a lot like Chris McCandless. There's still a part of me that wants to run off, burn my money and carry my worldly possessions on my back. The mystery is why Chris made his choice and I made mine. Great book that is sadly being made into a movie. I'll be surprised if the movie is even worth watching.

It wasn't until I got past past 50 that I began to like this book. You have to get used to the choppy writing. The author goes back and forth from modern times to the past often, sometimes each paragraph is set in a different time. I also wasn't happy with when the author chose to end the story. I would like to know what happened next. However, It is a great story and I learned a lot about the French Resistance.

Must watch "Capote" after reading. While reading I felt the author was giving us an amazing amount of knowledge. After seeing the movie "Capote", I realized how much he had kept hidden!
