Framed in Lace, by Monica Ferris, b-plus, Narrated by Susan Boyce, produced by Audiogo, downloaded from audible.com. This is the second in the Betsy Devonshire needlecraft series. This one starts only a couple of months after Betsy solves her sister’s murder, from the first book, and is staying on at least long enough to get the estate sorted out, and is keeping the store Crewel World open. In this book, everyone makes an event of going out on Lake Minnetonka to see a ferryboat raised from the bottom of the lake where it was deliberately sunk in 1948. But when the boat is raised, they find a skeleton of a young girl aboard with a piece of lace. Betsy begins investigating, asking questions. She finds that the townfolk remember a girl disappearing in 1948, along with a man, neither of them to appear again. It was assumed that the man, Carl, disappeared with the girl, leaving his wife and son behind. But, a day after the boat is raised, an old man is found dead in a motel room, and he is identified as the missing husband, Carl Winters, who had disappeared from town 50 years ago. As Betsy asks her questions and pokes around, she begins to uncover the truth of that long-ago day, and she helps to clear Carl’s wife who is being accused of the murders. We see a lot of the Monday Ladies club who come to work on needlecrafts on Monday afternoons, along with Betsy’s assistants, Godwin and Shelley, and who all have input into solving this mystery.

Especially fascinating were the articles on the inventor of ecstasy (and his encyclopedia of homemade hallucinogens!), cooperative deal-making behavior in primates, indigenous groups fighting being kicked off conservation preserves, possible sociological stresses of successful longevity treatments, the surprisingly complex (and sometimes beneficial) ecology of bacteria we carry and how antibiotics may be warping that ecology, and Oliver Sacks on his personal and professional relationship with Francis Crick.

Hands down, one of the best books I've ever read. It was packed with powerful punches that left me in tears (in a good way.) I'm hesitant about seeing the movie because it can't possibly live up to the book.

Oh now this was just precious. The Golden Compass is a kids' book in the Harry Potter vein, where our child protagonist is pulled out of her everyday surroundings into a world beyond her imagination -- a world which is her birthright. Or maybe I should say Harry Potter is in the vein of The Golden Compass, since the latter predates the former, having been published in 1995. While Harry Potter's gimmick is wizardry, The Golden Compass has something more subtle and profound: it's set in an alternate universe, where, among many other differences, each child is born with a "daemon." A daemon is sort of like a witch's familiar -- a cross between a pet and a soul -- and the daemon meme going around LJ is what got me to check this book out in the first place. Daemons and other themes are explored in a very adult manner that invites all kinds of what-if explorations of real-world philosophies like existentialism. I actually cried a little last night because I don't have a daemon. You'll understand if you read it. Which you should, because what with the high adventure and the various subtexts and the optimistic tone, it's worth the time. And if the golden compass of the title really existed, I would make it my business to become the best golden compass reader in the universe.
