I love books in the genre of women traveling (whether in cars, on foot, etc), so I expected to love this book, as well. Parts were good, but there were a lot of characters to keep track of and as a result some where not explored in depth enough. It's got a great premise, but I expected more.

I just finished this book last week and I already can't wait to reread it. I knew it was a good sign when the first few stories I read in this compilation left me thinking, "Wait, what?!" Nine stories is a compilation of ... wait for it...nine stories! Each one was pretty much trademark Salinger --Real-messed-up-fascinating characters, good dialogue, interesting events. Some of the stories were better than others, but all of them were pretty great. And as a compilation, I think it was fantastic. My favorites were: A Perfect Day for Bananafish, The Laughing, For Esme - With Love and Squalor and Teddy. Read it.

I read and re-read and re-re-read this book every year. It connects you to the story of human culture.
I will write more after we talk about it. So much to talk about.

I love sprawling stories like this. I loved how this was able to incorporate magic and Jewish mythology and comic books and novelty gifts and issues of homosexuality and love and brotherhood and all that stuff. This is an amazing book.

I purchased this book because I honestly loved the cover. My favorite blue-ish green and SMARTIES! As I recall, it is a bunch of short stories. Some were good, others were okay.

I liked the style the book was written in and felt like it really captured Richmond, VA in that time period. The story didn't catch me as much as I wanted it too, but it was engaging. I did spend most of the book trying to decide what had really happened to the girl in the reservoir and kept flipping back and forth on it.

Orr is very often quite funny, and is able to sketch out a map of modern American poetry in a somewhat haphazard way. The pretensions of modern poets and critics and readers are lightly mocked, and his realistic and pragmatic sensibility about the enjoyment of poetry is helpful. It's an appetizer, a introduction that cultivates an interested reader, without casting modern poetry into a new golden calf. The most pleasant realization I had while reading this book is that, yes, those blurbs on the jackets of new volumes of poetry are, yes, probably, at least partly, bullshit. The rite of initiation is a working interest, and you can read what you like, and change what you like, and hopefully avoid being scared into parroting or just scared away by the adulatory excess poets gild each other with.

Seemed long, wordy and complicated. I've read better communication books than this particular one.
