The Prophecy First I want to say that I really liked the cover of the book. I loved the gray tones that set the mood for the plot in the book. Now the book, I thought fell short. Although the book has an excellent plot, it felt rushed and therefore I didn’t get a chance to connect with any of the characters. Maybe if the book was a little longer, it would have helped to develop the characters and their relationships better. BLOG: http://www.onceuponatwilight.com/2011...

I liked this one better than Nefertiti, but the problem I'm still having with this author is... I wish there was more to each story! She ends the books so early in their lives, with the girls still so young. I wish we'd seen more of Nefertari on both ends, actually -- I'd have liked more of her life at the Temple of Hathor, and I'd have liked to have seen more of her as a successive queen. This book could've been twice as long, and I'd've been cheerful about it. I tore through this one, really -- I had to force myself to put it down last night so I could go to bed at a reasonable hour. Nefertari is more of an active protagonist than Mutny was, she takes more of a role in her own life. The character I found truly fascinating, though, was Woserit. The High Priestess of Hathor had a great, complicated role in the story with a rich background, and I thought she was pretty much the coolest thing happening on the page. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to lovers of historical fiction. It's definitely a light read, not an epic, but it's thoroughly entertaining.

Almost a relief after reading Becoming a Doctor. Transue is upbeat about her experience. She experiences thet same heartbreaks and cruel colleagues that Melvin Konner and others have, but she lets them slide off her back. She doesn't let people use her, but she views the bad in a wry way and cherishes the good. A very heartening collection for anyone suddenly having second thoughts about med school. Obviously there are many doctors, ergo there must be a percentage that didn't want to kill themselves in med school. Now, why aren't they writing books?

This is a terribly depressing read, simply because it's a terribly depressing subject: white, Western women are able to enjoy their postfeminist equality, but only by (under)paying non-white migrant workers to clean their homes and look after their children. It's a damning, seemingly-unsolvable problem and one that I wanted to know more about. But I really had to force myself to keep reading, because it's a topic that contains such upsetting truths. There are some great articles in the book, but I'm not crazy about their arrangement. From an editorial point of view, it seems slapdash -- almost as if someone ran a JStor search and threw together any article they could find that mentioned female migrant workers. As a result, some of the articles are pure academia, some are journalistic. It's an odd mix. The collection also ends up being very repetitive on some subjects. I can't help but feel that Global Woman was thrown together to capitalize on the success of Nickel and Dimed -- and, really, this couldn't be a more different book. I enjoyed Dimed for its claustrophobic, personal slant -- this is just a collection of essays, with little to tie it together. It's a worthy subject, but a heavy read, and I wish more care had gone into its compilation.

Elements and Style: The author uses lots of descripition so you can really see the setting clearly. He describes everything in great detail and devolps the story at a good pace, with nonstop action. The protangonist in this story is Will Henry, and the antagonist is the Anthropophagi. The mood is scary and suspenseful, because they are trying to kill the Anthropophagi before they hunt again. Will Henry narrates this story as well. Characterization: Will Henry is a twelve year old orphan who is under the care of Dr. Pellinore Warthrop. He is very loyal to the doctor. He does whatever is asked of him, and is quite brave. He fights and kills several Anthropophagi at the end of the book. He has fears just like all kids do, however. Will Henry is very intelligent, too. Plot: Twelve year old Will Henry lost both parents to a fire that consumed his home. Now he is apprenticed to the monstrumologist Pellinore Warthrop who his father devoted himself to. In the dead of the night, a grave robber called Erasmus Gray brings them a dug up girl entwined with an Anthropophagus. Anthropophagi are headless creatures with their mouths in their stomach and a large appetite for humans. Several more murders occur, and after a trip to the insane asylum to visit a dying ship captain, the monstrumologist and Will Henry peice together clues about the monsters arrival to their hometown. They set up a late night hunting party with the police and a dangerous man who's name is generally unknown to kill the beasts. Further investigation on that fateful night reveals that the person who immigrated these creatures was Pellinore's father himself, causing uncertainty for Will Henry's master.

Symphony of Blood is a supernatural thriller that I think a lot of readers may enjoy. However, despite really getting into it early in the book (and having a glowing blurb from an author I really like), overall I can't say I enjoyed this Hank Mondale Supernatural Case. It was what I consider a Yin-Yang read. For every part of it I really liked, there was an equal and opposite force acting against it and ultimately destroying the experience for me. When told from Hank Mondale's POV, the prose was a bit quirky and fun, well suited for a character that has to laugh at life a bit in order not to break. But at times I felt like I was spending a little too much time reading about mundane tasks that didn't push the story forward or build character or setting. For instance, going to the bathroom, or talking to his neighbors, or to his mutha' who I can only imagine sounds like Fran Dresher. When we switch POV's and get to see the monsters perspective, I have to say Adam Pepper did this quite well. I love reading non-human points of view when done right. But this is something I feel is better `sprinkled in' and this section seemed overlong too me. I would have enjoyed it more broken up. The characterizations are hit and miss too. On the surface Hank Mondale seems like a cliché. The private eye that couldn't be a cop because of a troubled past, who has problems with drinking and gambling. Sure it's been done before but it's done well here and I found him interesting enough. Symphony was an interesting, fleshed out character. And some of the side characters (like the druggy-couple in the apartment building) even though they got very little `screen-time' felt very real. I also liked the interplay between Hank and his kleptomaniac secretary. Others however, felt less real. But more importantly, I'm sad to say, I didn't see much in the way of character growth. The characters (the still-breathing ones) come out the end much the way they were at the start without any noticeable difference in their personalities or interpersonal relationships with each other. As far as spelling and grammar are concerned Symphony of Blood seemed well edited. I did notice a few missing words (unimportant things like `a' and `the'), a few missing punctuation marks, and a fair amount of word repetition. That last was the only thing that bothered me and seemed like it would have been an easy thing for an editor to catch. Lastly we come to the plot. There's a very interesting, original story here but a major plot-hole I noticed early on kept poking me like the annoying fly that keeps landing on your face while you're trying to sleep. The inciting incident, the idea that Hank Mondale would get involved in this story at all, indeed the entire plot, hinged upon a single motivational action. As the story progressed this initial choice began making less and less sense. To the point that I kept hitting the next button hoping to see a conspiracy, a double-cross, or some other twist that would line that original decision up, all the while with a sneaking suspicion that that wasn't going to happen. And it didn't. Bought this after visiting Blenheim Palace in the summer of 2009 - which stimulated an interest in the house itself and the Churchills.

I can see why this book is considered one of the seminal books on negotiation! I loved it and have been applying the concepts in everyday life.

It's a shame that all of Krentz's romances end up reading exactly the same. Still, this story is cute and the romance sweet.
