This is the last novel in the Harperhall triology and a great end it is.

It's not as good as 'The Lime Twig', still my favorite of the Hawkes I've read; in the same general vein as 'The Beetle Leg' but not as realized IMHO. All three of them make sense as his first three novels, compared to a book like 'The Blood Oranges', where he's left the surreal nightmare-scapes behind. Incredibly impressive for a 22 year old in the late 1940s. He is a difficult writer, it is disjointed in narrative and minimal in plot, and yet I am drawn to his work, in a way that I can't explain.

This was the book I wanted to write when I came to graduate school. When I realized that I had been beaten to it (and had seen my vision carried out in much more capable hands), I realized political science was not for me.

Fabulous book! What a great story! Edgar is 14 and was born mute (not sure why the author chose this for him -- anyone have an idea?) and grows up in a family that breeds its own special kind of dogs. Edgar's father dies and Edgar comes to suspect foul play. It's a mystery, an adventure tale (tail?) and an ode to a boy's love for his father and his obsession to find out the truth behind his father's death. It's also a tender and complex story of this boy's relationship with his dogs. It's exciting, suspenseful and tragic. Once I got into it, I just couldn't put it down. Note: This was an Oprah pick, which may be a turn-off for some, but IMO Oprah got it right this time!

Not much mystery in this one, but I enjoy Jesse Stone so much that I didn't mind. 1-19-14 Updating my original review by adding that I had NO memory of reading this until I got to the last page. What impressed me more than the mystery was the discussion that Jesse Stone, Molly, Suit, and other characters have about the way men and women view nudity. Again, Parker manages to bring literary and psychological depth to detective fiction.

It may be due to my small brain but parts of this book were very confusing. The ASA device is not the most intuitive so it really is not the authors fault. Having said that, I found the book helpful and reference it when I need to hack on these boxes.

I was hooked on this. I was even reading it at work, while waiting for my very slow computer to process the info it was being fed. Saiyuri's sincere voice throughout the novel contrasts with the ugliness and cruelty of the geisha world, from Mrs Nitta to Hatsumomo and later Pumpkin. She is not weak by any means, the subtle strengthening of her character and her refusal to be hardened throughout the novel binds her to your heart. The isolation of a geisha's life stuck out for me. Viewed possessively by men and viewed warily by other women, the geisha is alone in her world. Even other geishas should be viewed with some suspicion, given the constant competition over mizuage price, adoption by an okiya, and snagging of a wealthy patron. Geishas are presented as different from prostitutes, yet the reader can't help but think that geishas are similarly enslaved to their customers. Cultural acceptance is on the geisha's side, but the factors of beauty, desire, wealth and most importantly, submission, still form the basis of her occupation. The ending was a little too tidy for my taste, I would rather a more conflicted end. I suppose I can't complain about a happy ending in this case however, given that it is based on a true story.

Me detuve a mitad de camino ya que no estaba llegando a ninguna parte. ¡Tuve que volver a leer varios pasajes y tuve que guardar notas sobre personajes / ubicaciones, etc., estaba por todas partes!
