I think this book is great way to introduce series and chapter books. I was attached to these as a child, and I'm sure future generations will be as well!

The premise of the book is rather nice (about how in the era of globalisation football clubs remain extremely rooted to their place of origin). Unfortunately the book is rather selective and ignores too many important clubs (Real Madrid, Liverpool and all the Argentinian clubs are a few examples) to be considered comprehensive. Additionally just when the author seems to hit upon an interesting aspect he decides to change continents/countries thereby leaving you rather hanging. What is nice about the book is that one does get an understanding as to why certain clubs hate each other so much (Rangers vs Celtic) and how club football in countries like Italy has been rigged for years. The best part of the book though is the ending where he talks about how football has shaped Iran and the fact that even the mullahs have decided to use it as a weapon rather than risk an uprising in trying and sqaushing it. All in all if you are a big soccer fan read it and you will find enough trivia to throw around and sound knowledgeable else avoid.

So, I'm torn. One the one hand I hope this story plays no role whatsoever in any of the future Fables volumes. At the same time, I'd hate to think I wasted my time reading it.

While I was working at Barnes and Noble, and I found myself sneaking a copy of this off the shelves, hiding in the Reference books and reading whenever I had a chance. Eventually, a co-worker would find me because I was laughing. Fo future reference, making a loud noise while trying to hide is proabbly not the best route to take. Sedaris is Hilarious.
I enjoy books which are written with past & present. Enjoyed this book very much!! Deborah Lawrence rocks! I did have to re-read some of the pages to remember the past/present sequence...but that could have been from being in a post-surgery-pain-meds haze :) Great read for fans of historical fiction, Enjoy!
