i read this in the heyday of my chick-lit obsession; it's much smarter than i originally gave it credit for. which is not to say it's a tome of great importance, but it's a decent example of the genre that won't make you feel as though your brain is leaking out your ears.

It's hard to say why I enjoyed this novel .I almost put it down during the first chapter but am glad I decided to stay with it. I know next to nothing about Ethiopia and enjoyed the historical insights there. The medical details where almost too much for me to handle(I am hospital squeamish anyway) and the narrator was rather irritating in many ways, but the sum total was a well-written, good story.

It definately had a slow first half but then became more interesting. It didn't take much time and it was neat to see how it tied in to the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. If you haven't read either, I would read the Lion, the witch, and the Wardrobe first.

The patterns in this book are really lovely, and it's so interesting to see pictures (albeit tiny ones) of the original inspirations from the 1940s and 50s. There are several patterns I would love to knit once I feel comfortable with my knitting skills. This is a book I would probably buy down the road, once I am a more advanced knitter. I didn't really like how the pictures were all in the front of the book, and the patterns in the back. I'd rather have them side-by-side. Just a small complaint.

Awalnya, sih, nggak tertarik sama sekali dengan novel ini. Bacanya saja baru belakangan, minjam pula (akhirnya, sih, deibeli juga). Meskipun alur ceritanya agak terbilang lambat, bikin saya kepingin buru-buru balik halaman saja, tapi saya suka plot ceritanya. Ada cerita di dalam cerita. Topik yang diangkat pun lumayan sensitif, lesbian. Saya yang terbiasa membaca buku-buku Clara, gara-gara skripsi, sebelumnya jadi menemukan sedikit perbedaan darinya dalam novel ini. Salut juga dia berani mengangkat topik ini tanpa bermaksud menghakimi, bahkan dimuat sebagai cerbung di Kompas. In generally, semua orang pasti punya masa lalu yang ditutupi, rahasia, bagaimana kita belajar menerima masa lalu orang di sekitar kita itulah yang nggak mudah.
