I loved this book. It was entertaining and it even had some surprises that I was not expecting. The Fablehaven series is great. Mull has a good imagination.

A historical fiction book based around the Salem witch trials. I found the first half hard to get into, but the second half was more interesting. The characters were a bit flat, but she managed to capture the horror (and bewilderment) of what had to go wrong for such an event to take place. Like all books I read about the Salem witch trials, I'm left pondering on how quickly civilization and morals can crumble with fear and power. Where would I have stood in those days?
This is the prequel to the city of Ember. This is placed before the city of ember was built and was only being thought of. The main character is Nickie and her aunt. They came to the town of Yonwood, North Carolina from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They moved in at their great-grandfathers mansion which is where they are trying to fix up and re-sell. Nickie finds out that the whole town follows this young lady’s predictions because she is what they call the prophet. Nickie finds this weird boy who is in love with snakes and everything about them. Together they try to find the terrorist that is reported to be around the woods outside of town. They figure out it’s just an albino bear. The prophet is actually asleep and is only talking in her sleep. What happens when she finally wakes up you’ll have to read to find out.

Absolutely loved this book! Growing up in upstate New York during this era, I was aware of all that was happening, as well as the life style of the people on this story. Being 'aware' of it and reading what it was actually like for the people living it, are 2 very different things. Very enlightening and emotion stirring. Excellent writing and reading. I would dare to hope for a sequel.
I read this in High School but so glad Nikol had it on her list because it encourages me to read it again to refresh.
It was very touching. Sweet to see a single mother take care of her sick son so well.

This is the BEST relationship book I've ever read! Simple, no nonsense approach.

2013: I started crying during Emily's big speech. Right there at my desk. Like a real human. Something is wrong with me. I think it surprises people that I love this play so much. It doesn't have mummies, or violence, or, really, much of anything. It's so simple that some people find it boring, but I find it refreshing. The lack of cynicism is something sorely needed in this day and age, and I go to Our Town for a reminder of what it means to have faith in humanity, to believe that everyone is really good on the inside, or to appreciate the small everyday acts that have huge consequences. POTENTIAL SPOILER Last year, I saw a production of Our Town, and George did NOT throw himself at Emily's feet in the 3rd act (as specified in the stage directions, thank you). That is my favorite, FAVORITE moment in the play--maybe my favorite moment in all of theater--and the fact that the director left it out ruined the whole production for me. You can see it affected me, since I'm still mad about it a year later. Bah.
