Anyone that has read Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series should recognize the great story telling in this book. Williams creates a very believable future. At times I was questioning why a particular thread was even in the story as it didn't even seem relevant to any other part of the story, but eventually you see the connection. Like Stephen King, Williams develops the characters with great detail. Which adds as much to the story as the rich world. A very long read, but worth the effort.

I remember thinking this fell really short of the Hatchet. It's still a decent read but it really doesn't measure up to the first one.

Not finishing, couldn't stay interested, blaming it on my own mood versus the book, as I don't want to color anyone's opinion.

This book was excruciating to read in the same way a movie is painful to watch when you know the character in question is just self-destructing. The ideas of home and an absolute right/wrong are thoroughly dissected.

this book is probably on no one’s Top List, and the romance part doesn’t interest me much, but it has a great element of friendship here, and it portrays the warm relationship between four people - Hero(Kitten), hero, and two his friends whose names slipped from me just now – that I enjoyed a lot and in my opinion lifts the book from the mediocrity.

Very good for his first book. Fast paced and a good pager turner.

Hardwick called the essay form "a great meadow of personal style" or something crazy like that and I took her word for it, absolutely studied this book as a high schooler, read Barthelme's Not-Knowing and other gems, and as a result this has to be one of those five-star books I judge not for its objective quality but for its profound and serendipitous effect on my life.
It had me until the end. Sometimes, you just want a happy ending, darn it.

Desearía haber escrito este libro. "Poderoso" no comienza a describirlo.
