It was my first book by Jonathan Carroll and I'll read more by this author for sure. It is a strange book with the elements of supernatural, New Age, mysterious beings and so much more. The idea is that some part of humanity gained power to decide the time of their death and it changed the whole structure of relations with God and afterlife. The main character meets his own doubles that have been created by his thoughts at the different times of his life. While he had already moved on, the old selves are still full of old anger and fears and now in the opposition to his current life. Imagine if our hates and fears from the past materialised into the separate beings and came to haunt the present, we would not recognise ourselves in these monsters. There were a lot of lessons and insights in the "Ghost of love".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. from the original language and metaphors, to the twisting plot yet satisfying ending, I was eager to steal moments alone to read, read, read. It may have worked to my advantage, not knowing the original story of the goose girl--it probably made for more surprises than it would have otherwise... This is a book that I would have liked to have written! Goose girl review number 2. We recently listened to the audio version of this book and wow was it unsatisfying. Instead of one narrator, they chose a whole cast--and most of the acting was laughable. Indeed, we were constantly rolling our eyes at one another in the car, and moaning when the music that opened and closed chapters came on. I would have been horrified if this had been my book. So... read it, don't listen to it. Amazing how the words can become corny or lose their meaning when uttered by an amateur.

Taleb wrote this book before The Black Swan - though I'm not sure if it makes sense to read in the same order or not. I didn't, and found it interesting to see the earlier version of some of his thoughts. The two books seem to re-enforce and clarify each other -- though largely through repetition. I likely will re-read the two books anyway.

I really enjoyed this sequel to Persepolis and read it this morning under the covers when I woke up early. The story of Marjane Satrapi's life is so unlike any other memoir I have read, I really found myself carried away to the Middle East through her pictures and dialog. Definitely read the books in order, and definitely read them close together. I anxiously look forward to starting the movie now, which I am told is a combination of both books. I recommend this for people who have never read graphic novels and are skeptical (like I was) or anyone who enjoys memoirs.

Bloodroot is spellbinding. I loved it. The different narrators didn't bother me; in fact, I enjoyed reading the various viewpoints. That's saying something, because sometimes that sort of thing does bother me. I thought it was really interesting how the character of Myra, who seems so compelling and magnetic (almost magical) when described by the other characters, seems so ordinary when we read her section. I recall one character saying “She’s made out of flesh and blood, just like anybody else.” The story of this family in Appalachia and what they go through over the years is heartbreakingly sad, but it's handled in such a beautiful way by the author. You really feel like you are there in the story; you see the mountain and you can so easily picture the characters. It's emotional without being sappy or maudlin. Unlike some other reviewers, I really liked the ending too. I read this in February so it's still early, but I'm guessing this will end up being one of my favorite books that I read in 2011.

I think in 50 years, this will prove to be a new classic. It's got all those universal themes of literature: guilt and redemption, mainly. However, it's set in a part of the world that's pretty mysterious to most of us. Hosseini sheds some light on the history of Afghanistan in a way that will hook you in (after the first 40 pages, at least). After I made my coworkers read this one, we immediately added it to our curriculum for 11th and 12th grader--in an advanced class, mind you. This book is not appropriate for those lacking maturity. Another note: literary scholars often refer to Iago in Othello as the most evil villain in all of literature, but I think Hosseini's villain blows Iago out of the water.
