I think everyone needs to read this book! It was amazing. I love the way Jodi Picooult writes in the voices of all her different characters.

I was a little disappointed that this didn't take off somewhere in the neighborhood of Last Hope (what can I say? I'm a series 'ho!) but other than being stand-alone when I kinda expected a continuation, I have no complaints about SLIH…except, maybe the length? *g* Seriously though, I liked it: Short, to the point and hot.
Like!!!! I want his job! Travelling around the world testing food everywhere and get paid for it.. This fully illustrated travelling journal is one of my favorite. Reading the book really took me together with the writer to the places that he went to. The book is well written with the writer personal thought about the place. http://farizahrin.blogspot.com/2011/0...
Fascinating premise and fast-paced, intricate, and interesting plot kept me riveted.

This should be the next book you read! I loved it all, the writing, the story- it was a fantastic book that made my very short favorites list.
This book had a little bit of everything: history, intrigue, romance and humor. I loved the attitude of the master of all desires: Menander, the head that wouldn't die. Nostradamus also played a role in the story. I was intimidated at first because there were many historical figures to remember: 3 pages worth at the beginning, in fact. Once I decided I didn't have to memorize them, I just starting reading and was immediately pulled in to the story. I liked that the story was told from many different points of view. The only criticism I have is that while all the scenes were told from third person perspective, Sibille's story was told from first. I think it would have been more effective if the author would have chosen one viewpoint (omniscient) and stuck with it. Highly recommended for those who like the stories told in the time of King Henry & the struggle for world domination between England, France & Spain.

This book gives you a view behind the scenes on Wall Street during one of the biggest LBOs in history. It is a very onteresting read to try and understand the thought process of people who have billions of dollars at their ready to buy/sell as they please. It also shows how relationships and greed can pervert the pure market to get less than ideal results for the common man. This is even more important book to read now with Mitt Romney using his time at Bain as qualification to be President. The one negative to this book is that it is overly detailed and precise. I thought it dragged on at times with mundane detail.

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. First, let me say that I don't like romance novels and I didn't realize when I picked this one up that it was a romance. If you like romance novels, you can add a hypothetical star to my 2 stars. Actually, the story was pretty good for a romance. The writing was lively and active, the characters were interesting, deep, and well-done. Ms. Vaughan has a way of making them come alive with well-described mannerisms and facial expressions. The main female character is feisty and likable, the main male character is a barbarian warlord (how hot is that?). The story was interesting though it didn't have many fantasy elements. I suppose we call this "low fantasy," but my speculation is that some romance authors call their work fantasy so they can use a completely made up world which requires very little historical research. (I'm not accusing Ms. Vaughan of this in particular, it's just an aside.) But now I know what it is I don't like about romance novels. It's not that I don't like romance. I DO like romance, I consider myself a fairly romantic person, and I like romantic sub-plots in my fantasy -- they aid characterization and help us to empathize. What I DON'T like is that romance novels all have the same goal. We're just waiting... and building tension... and getting all hot and bothered... until finally... The hero and heroine hit the hay. It's always the same climax. (Sorry for the bad pun, but I hope you appreciated the alliteration). In a romance novel, the romance is the main plot (I guess that's why they call it a romance novel, eh?) and everything is written around it just to provide a context for the physical relationship. So, as a rule, romance novels are not known for being excellent literature, and this novel doesn't break the rule. But it does break several grammar rules, and elementary ones, too. For example: Incorrect usage: "But experience had been a hard teacher, harder then Eln had ever been." "His broad, round face was grim, and while not as dark as the man on the cot, he was darker then most." "The expressions ran the gauntlet from pity to amazement to mirth." Run-on sentences: "It was early enough the market was not crowded." "The tent seemed to glow it was so bright." Verb tense changes: "After I passed Anna's inspection, and been given a quick hug,..." There are other issues: spelling errors, pronouns missing their direct objects, possessives missing apostrophes... I could go on, but I won't. (You're welcome.) No matter how high-spirited the heroine, or how hunky the hero, I can not forgive these sorts of mistakes. They are too distracting and it's inexcusable. How does it happen that a published author doesn't know basic fourth grade grammar? Perhaps the mistakes are just typing errors, but why didn't Tor's editors catch them?? Unbelievable! SHAME ON YOU, TOR! I will not be reading any more Tor romances. Read this review in context at Fantasy Literature

The book takes a while to get started...it follows a club of Dante Alighieri scholars while they track a serial killer in post Civil War Boston who is ticking off his victims according to Dante's texts. It's a fair amount of literary fiction (though fascinating) tied in with a tame murder/mystery plot. Once you get into the meat of the book, it's hard to put down. I'm currently re-reading (for roughly the 8th time) and love it.

Almost as good as the first one. Glad to see Harper is coming around. Found this one wrapped up a little quickly for my taste. I did have two suspects in mind. I'm glad I had to wait until the end to understand it all.
