some of the stories i could've gone without reading, but anything with achebe's name on the cover (writer or editor) deserves a chance i think.

The book, set in 1930’s Edinburgh, features a group of girls and their overly romantic (yet manipulative) teacher Miss Brodie who despite being ‘in her prime’ lives vicariously through her girls. As the main character boldly proclaims in one of her many quotable moments “Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life”. Having first read it at 15 and Miss Brodie still having a hold over me I would say that this is perfectly accurate.

I have owned several dogs during my lifetime, and have one right now whom I love. Having said that, I found this book not to be what I had expected, and overly sentimental. It's an easy read, but I don't recommend it. I'm hoping to read the author's new book about the Constitution when it becomes available at the library, and hope it is a better book than this one.

I picked this up since it was supposedly the first of the adventures leading up to "Last of the Mohicans," and I thought I would read the entire collection. The prose is decidedly stilted, and the characters, who might have been endearing, simply seem uni-dimensional. I was very disappointed, since James Fenimore Cooper is supposedly one the great American novelists. Perhaps if I had given one of his other works a chance, I would be less disappointed.
