I first encountered O BEULAH LAND when my history professor at U.Va., Stephen Innes, assigned it for his Colonial America class. It was the only piece of fiction he assigned, and he said he did so because it illustrated ways of living and thinking and striving in colonial Virginia better than many non-fiction works. He was absolutely right. I read a great deal of historical fiction, and O BEULAH LAND is one of the best examples of immersing readers fully in another time and place. Settle makes the reader feel at home despite unabashed use of period language and a refusal to sugarcoat unsavory aspects of the past. The reader comes to understand why colonists hungered so deeply for land and were willing to risk so much to push westward despite royal prohibitions, the lack of effective civil governance, and the anger of the Indians on whose land they were encroaching. To achieve this immersion, she tells parallel and intersecting stories of several settlers representing a wide range of backgrounds and personalities: the French and Indian war veteran seeking to establish himself as a large landowner, his wife and children who may not be prepared for a move to the frontier, an evangelistic backwoodsman and his wife who escaped indentured servitude, a scholar who becomes a frontier printer and schoolmaster. It isn't the easiest book to dive into at first, but if you give it a chance and want an immersive historical experience, the effort will be well-rewarded.

This book frustrated me. It really did. It felt like, well, as much as I hate to say it, a filler. And it just made me sad, in a lot of ways. I want so bad for Harry and Murphy to get together, and also for him to get to kinda know his daughter at least a little. This book made it look like neither were ever going to happen. Hence my sadness. But! The ending was a very redeeming factor. I was happy with that and it gave me hope. I'm expecting very big things from Cold Days.

Such a sweet little story about friendship. Has very few words per page which makes it a great bedtime story in my opinion.

Lovely for what it was, which was a simple, sweet story of being seventeen and first love. And yes... better than Anna & the French Kiss in my opinion. Cricket Bell is loverly.

Utterly magnificent. For Mira Grant to fit so many themes and metaphors so elegantly into one book is nothing short of astonishing. And the plethora of accurate details, like the Australian medico in the UK for example is wonderful too. There's so much detail and it's all good. I just love this series and I've not been a fan of the zombie genre as such before. Though I had this from the day it was released, I'm very glad I had the discipline to wait to read it until the eve of the release of Deadline. I'm very keen now to see how the Newsflesh Trilogy is wrapped up. On a parochial note, I'm very glad that in this world I'd be fairly safe from animal zombies in Australia, as with the majority of our animals being snack sized for cats and foxes and the feral zombie sized fauna sticking to the bush, we'd be pretty safe even in the country towns. So in addition to being safe from the next rat spread plague due to our venemous snakes, it seems we'll be safe from this form of zombie due to the sheer lack of nutrition in our ancient continent too. Phew! ETA the concept of zombie wombats and zombie 'roos is a bit scarey but they tend not to come into towns in any case. I daresay zombie 'roos would clear out Canberra though. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Breaking Dawn was so fun to read. It was a longer book but worth it. Stephenie used such good discription. I could picture everything in my mind like a movie. The ending just amazed me. This book is about a couple that gets married. It's about their life after their marrige and many things change that they dont expect. It has alot of twists in it and things that you wouldn't expect. It has alot of action and romance. I recomend this book to anyone likes action and romance. I dont want to spoil the book so I wont say any thing else about this book. It was so good!

Not sure of this at first, but after the first few chapters....COULD NOT put it down!! It's a strange "love triangle", but it turns out to be one of those books that you are glad to have picked up. I loved it. Some may not, but I sure did.
