Very quirky, interesting read. I did not find it nearly as riveting as I had hoped, but definitely glad I read it.

I have been thinking about what to say about Mark Bittman's "Food Matters" for a couple of days now. As much as I wish that I could avoid the comparison to Michael Pollin's "Omnivore's Dilemma," I really don't see how I can avoid it. Bittman's book is like Pollin's if you took out the interesting storylines and personal insights. And then added some recipes at the end. I actually don't want to sound too dismissive about those recipes, they are actually the best part of the book. They are the types of recipes that don't normally make it into cookbooks. And Bittman writes them in such a way as to encourage the chef to fiddle with, well, pretty much everything. At the end of the day, read Pollin. If you find that you need to read the same thing in a different tone, read Bittman.

Impresionante!

Dominic And Marisa -- Blazing A Trail Of Fiery Desire Across Three Continents! I've chatted about this book with a number of Goodreads friends ever since I first came on this site. But I feel compelled to share a very kinky secret I've never admitted to anyone before! You see, it's not the brutal rapes and the multiple scenes of degrading violence that Marisa endures that make this book so compulsively addicting to me. No, the thing I like about this book is that, in a weird way, it's almost hands down the most luxurious and languidly paced story I've ever read. What I mean is, when you read closely, Marisa is always being whisked off to one exotic locale after another, only somehow, she's always being pampered and waited on and allowed to sleep late and sort of just reclining in luxury in an almost dazed state as she waits for the next roller-coaster ride of sexual excitement to begin. Did you ever notice how many times in this book Marisa is "dazed" or "exhausted" while something big is happening? You can always count on her to be dozing when her carriage is abducted by rapists or when her sweetheart has just begged her to elope. And her default mode when it comes to getting some down time is to "sleep till noon." Is this girl channeling Scarlett O'Hara, or Homer Simpson, or Garfield? As each new chapter in her life begins, she's always sleeping till noon. Dumped in Paris among strangers? Sleeps till noon and awakens in a strange house. Kidnapped by a desert sheikh? Has fabulous butt sex with a man she barely knows? No problem, she gets to sleep into the afternoon the next day. Trapped in a steamy plantation mansion with a nasty stepmother who really hates her? Sure, it's upsetting, but she still manages to sleep until noon. This books should be called WICKED LUXURIOUS LIFESTYLES. And that's why I love it!

My knowledge of Marco Polo and the Mongols was limited and only partially accurate before I read this book. I knew Marco Polo as the man who brought noodles to Italy (not true) and the Mongols as the absolute worst civilization to play as in Civilization Revolutions (oh so terribly true). It's dry in parts, and a little bit hard to follow in others -- which I blame mostly on my own lack of knowledge of Asian history -- but for the most part the book is as engaging and escapist as a novel. I felt transported into the past, when the world was a mystery to all but a brave few.

This is Jaycee Dugard's personal account of what she endured for 18 years after being abducted by Phillip and Nancy Garrido. I'm amazed at how sane, courageous, positive and loving she is after what she was exposed to. She is truly inspiring! As for the Garridos, the darkest pit in Hell is even too good for them!

Unintentionally hilarious. I had to read this for a "Sexuality and Literature" course as an undegrad, and I clearly recall my classmate Bryan and I reading from the book aloud in our dorm. Favorite turn of phrase: "blazing f*ck stream."

A Short book but a funny book.
Fabulous read--the characters never get tiresome no matter how many times I read this book.
