As the title suggests, a thoroughly pretentious, often infuriating, very occasionally interesting exercise by an important critic whose name I'd never heard of. Sutherland's prose flies by (the only reason I finished the thing), and he does manage to provide some solid information on the history of the novel--though nothing that you wouldn't have learned in any decent Literature 101 class. When discussing modern literature, his examples rely heavily and predictably on nominees and laureates of the Man Booker prize (not incidentally, an award whose committee he has chaired.) Perhaps some would find it useful--it certainly reminded me of a few things I had forgotten from a certain freshman-year seminar--but I find myself wishing that I had my four-and-a-half hours back.

Not a book to plop down and read for fun. Deep, requires a lot of thought. Incredibly well-written.

This was a really good book. I like how each chapter covered a different character. I like how things twisted and turned and were never just as they seemed. The Epilogue also makes me think that there will be a continuation of this book.

Vampires, romance, and teenagers? Nuh-uh! That was my initial reaction. Then I thought I'd read it only to join the ranks of THEM and give it a good trashing. Then came: "You've got to read it!" and "WHAT?! You still haven't read it?" So, I finally picked up Twilight to see what it was all about. And I liked it, enjoyed it!! There's lots that is wrong with this book. For starters— it's filled with clichés and some awful grammar. It's not literary fiction, I get that, but it's no excuse for bad writing. Also, it definitely doesn't appeal to my feminist side; actually that side is pretty miffed with Bella for being such a damsel-in-distress throughout the story. Then, there was the whole obsession thing which I simply found creepy. So yeah, I was surprised at how I got carried away with the story. It drew me in so much that I actually pulled an all-nighter to finish this book, enjoying the escape it provided. An addictive and enjoyable read—if you're forgiving enough to overlook the flaws and wise enough to give your cynical self a much needed rest.

this book made it so that my bike getting a flat tire on monday was not a tragedy. it meant i could read this on my subway commute. yes! what i loved about this book: - her magical ocd thinking when she was a kid. a metaphysical crisis where she began to insert "i think" in very small lettering among her journal entries about mundane things. we went to the beach (i think). john found a cool stick. then we ate cucumber sandwiches. (i think). --> then it became a symbol, instead of "i think", then that symbol started covering entire sentences and pages. - her description of her coming out process as an intellectual one. reading books. discovering in the library all these people who spoke directly to a part of her. - the development of her family's creative solitude - the portrayal of how frustrating yet intriguing her father was. the way her father sends her this letter assuming she already knows he's gay, talking about it in this way like she knows... its like he's a kid. you're both mad at him and want to give him a hug. - the way she wanted to be a boy and her dad wanted to be a girl. their awkwardness in talking about this. what i liked less: - her story is intertwined with some of the classic novels and characters that her father loved, and even though there was always some explanation, the comparisons and transitions became a bit confusing towards the end for someone unfamiliar with those story-lines and people.

Yes, it's an important work and yes, it is a MUST-READ for serious students of ancient history. It's just so damned boring! The Peloponnesian War broke out in 431 BC and continued intermittently for twenty-seven years. It pitted an all-powerful land force (Sparta and its allies) against a supremely powerful naval force (Athens). Thucydides actually participated in this conflict, a war which he realized would have a greater influence on the history of Greece than any other war. The History of the Peloponnesian War is true to its title: it is a story of battles and sieges, of alliances hastily made and soon broken, and most importantly, of the behavior of people as the war dragged on and on, and the inevitable "corrosion of the human spirit."

I enjoyed the book but needed the help of some outside sources to fully understand it as it is a difficult book to read in places. Another fascinating look into the southern lifestyle, gender roles, etc. Its amazing to see such diverse characters and contrasting characters all coming from the same place. Some filled with so much compassion and love while others are only motivated by their own greed and hatred of all things around them.

Since I have often read legal thrillers, I was interested in how the lawyers are trained. Scott Turow's book about his firt year at Harvard Law School I found very, very interesting. Some of the technical data may have changed--prices for lawyers; people use laptops now not typewriters and so on. But human nature changes slowly if at all. The pressure, stress and competitiveness that Turow describes no doubt still fairly accurate even after all these years. I recommended it for any interested in law or lawyers; I give it a solid 3 stars; not fantastic but well worth reading if the subject matter is of interest to yoou.
