A bit like comparing "Murder She Wrote" to "CSI" but these murder mysteries are still entertaining, especially because of the young Flavia, her pranks with her sisters Daffy and Feely, and the quaint British village where she lives.

This is my favorite book! I learned a lot from it, and pretty much read it once a year. He writes with such a patient directness, an innocence and a lot of care. Sentences are short, paragraphs are dreamy, the characters are presented as if you have always known them, and him himself, though his characters are not necessarily him, are so personal and happy to be sharing these words with you- it's like a big handshake. Funny and poignant and all over the place- i get attached to different parts each time. Go ahead and read it, okay?

I am reminded to post about this book after reading _Outliers_ by Malcolm Gladwell today. Outlier's Chapters 4 & 9 especially deal with the similar subject of the gates to success. Here's part of what I wrote about Sacks' book on my blog runspotrun.com: In his book Tearing down the gates: Confronting the class divide in American education, Peter Sacks thoroughly documents how much more difficult it is for low-income students to get the best out of school and from there get to the best colleges. He offers some ideas for helping the system change. Probably to win over those who expect it, Sacks does update the age-old international and economic competition argument as an incentive to change, but the reader senses that down-deep he believes the incentive is a simpler, and dare I say moral, one: we are all better off when we are each well-enough off.

i read this quickly for a paper about liberation theology (farmer is a fan), and have been trying to figure out how to fit farmer into the various debates and have been struggling. In an attempt to get a grip on him i punched into google successively, "critique of paul farmer," "criticize paul farmer," "criticism of paul farmer." Nothing, nothing, nothing. In the whole big internet?! This guy has written a book self-styled as a stab in the eye to power structures and no one has taken the time to respond. It can only be because his assertions, that poor people should have good medical care and other good things as well and that power structures should be less bad, are so vague that it would be impossible or pointless to respond. Paul Farmer is a wonderful person and what he does is inspiring and important. In that way, this book is inspiring. But in every other way, it's a bad book. thus endeth my first good reads review

In the same lines of Mike Gecan's Going Public, Cold Anger tells the stories of another community organizer, Ernie Cortez, in south Texas. Not as great on the theoretical aspects of organizing, this story is told through a third party; an observer who spent time with Cortez and watched him in action. While there isn't the intensity of Going Public, Cold Anger is another great primer in community organizing.
Loved this book! It's really two books, but I found them both equally fascinating, even though it kind of seemed as if he'd started out writing historical fiction, but then changed his mind and wrote a book about something else altogether. I didn't mind though.

Great follow up to Moon Called, more interesting information about the main characters and fresh new characters - some a bit creepy.

I started out really, really interested in this book, and then I got bogged down in all the details and started to not be able to keep track of all the people Meade throws in the account. Still, I think this is more a comment on me as a reader than the book. Parker is one of the great American wits, and this book gives you a satisfying glimpse into her circle. It is chock full of details, and was obviously meticulously researched, so if that floats your boat, you will really like it.

I love Dave Ramsey. We have been doing the Total Money Makeover since Jan 1 of this year (we started after reading Dave's book "Financial Peace") and we are already seeing plenty of success with our baby steps. We pay for everything in cash now and if we don't have the cash, we don't buy it. We've got an emergency fund in place and have used it when things came up - auto repairs, etc. And best of all, we are in debt reduction mode - we had cut up all the credit cards Jan 1 and now we only see balances getting smaller or eliminated. I highly recommend Dave's book. Wish I had found it as a younger person. He writes in an very straight-forward, easy to understand way, without being dry or dull.
