Worst book ever.

The altering narrative made this book spectacular and much more interesting than most books of today. 4 stars because I was disappointed by the final part, but after studying Russian literature and poetry this year, I can see that this would have been a common, if unsurprisingly, ending. However, some books aren't made just for their ending, and this is one of those books. Would definitely recommend.

I received this book from my mother-in-law, Martha Howorth. It is a clear, informative and colorful history of corn whiskey and moonshining in the States. It's an entertaining, quick read.

David Sedaris is one of my favorite essayists, but this effort just wasn't up to snuff with his previous collections. If you haven't read him yet, don't start with this -- start with Me Talk Pretty Someday.
April’s book club selection, not a book I would have picked and I almost did not read it. That said, I enjoyed this book and a few times even laughed out loud. The book is about various areas of sexual research. I really enjoyed Mary Roach’s writing; a couple of my favorite passages follow. Apparently at one time, in the 1970’s, many penises were cut off by vengeful wives in Thailand. So much so that reattachment surgery was “perfected.” Roach writes, “When a suitably equipped microsurgeon was on hand to reattach the errant appendage, the men were able to resume philandering within a matter of months.” “Women who came to him for contraceptive advice were told to wear a piece of cat liver in an ivory tube attached to their left foot. Though I suppose this might well keep you from getting pregnant, in the same way that wearing Birkenstocks might.” “If it’s any solace, even female rats have trouble focusing. I give you a sentence, my favorite sentence in the entire oeuvre of Alfred Kinsey, from Sexual Behavior in the Human Female: “Cheese crumbs spread in front of a copulating pair of rats may distract the female, but not the male.”” About a female type Viagra drug’s side effects: “And a drug that can make a woman with “black dots on face” feel sexy is a drug to look into further.”

This book is so heartbreaking and beautiful and truthful. The main character - a 9-year-old boy named Oskar Schell - is dealing with the death of his father, who was killed in the World Trade Center on September 11. Oskar is a very smart boy with what seems to be autistic tendancies. He has a difficult time communicating what he feels on the inside, but he is, for the most part, in pain over the death of his father. This book is a modern-day New York fairytale. I cried for the last 40 pages, and that has NEVER happened to me while reading. I've gotten a bit teary over books in the past, but this book absolutely swept the carpet out from under me. I want everyone to read this book.

I’ve just finished reading Gabriel’s Return by Steve Umstead and found it a great continuation of the Evan Gabriel series. Steve Umstead’s first book, Gabriel’s Redemption, showed me the skill and great storytelling abilities of the author. Gabriel’s Return is no exception. The story of Evan Gabriel’s return to military action starts a bit slow but the author paints a wonderful descriptive picture of life on Mars and builds to a mission made for Gabriel and his team. Political elements on Earth plot and put into action steps to gain and control power on free governing planets. Mars is one but the planet Eden is the first step in these power brokers plan. Eden at first seems to be the perfect world for its inhabitance but a closer look shows it to be a dangerous place to live. Plants and animals there find humans to be just another step in the food chain. Students from Mars are on Eden to study these creatures but become hostages and used in an attempt to take control of Mars. Evan Gabriel and his team are called in to put a stop to this power play and are sent to Eden to recover the hostages and bring the planet back under control. Evan was the only survivor on a previous mission to Eden and the loss of the men and women of his old team still haunts him as he tries to take control of the situation. Gabriel’s Return is a great Sci-Fi to read and I highly recommend it. Steve Umstead is a master of showing the reader a world that we might see in the future. You won’t regret reading this series of books. I can’t wait for the conclusion of the Evan Gabriel series, Gabriel’s Revenge.
