I read this book as a sophomore and it still has an impact on me today. What remained with me is a strong sense of injustice, how the pigs took advantage of the trusting naive animals to make an easy life for themselves, while harvesting accords and respect for their political beliefs. It was utterly ruthless to have Napoleon sell out Boxer to the slaughterhouse when the horse became sick and weak with exhaustion. It is a familiar story, where the educated ignore or take advantage of the disenfranchised, animals or Deaf people, to make themselves look good or to gain influence in the community. While teaching Deaf adults to read between the lines, I talked about the people's perspective of Uncle Joe Stalin, and asked the students who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. The adult students thought Stalin was a good guy even though historians estimated that he killed between 20 to 60 millions people. Also I noticed the students with low education background had the tendency to read and take the writing at the face value. Like for example, I wrote out, Stalin, a good leader, killed 20 to 60 millions of his own country citizens while Hilter, an evil leader, killed 6 millions of his own country citizens. The student thought Stalin was a good leader simply because the teacher wrote that Stalin was a good leader. Hopefully by using the book as a warning to be careful what and who you believe, I can show the students how to be more of a discerning reader rather than just gloss over the writing and accept the message, no matter how wrong it is.

I found this so hard to read and remain interested in. I just don't like Tolkien's style or subject matter. It could have done with being about a third of the length. Sorry, Hobbit fans, I must be one of the only people in the world that doesn't like this book.

Bill Bryson writes with a great deal of humor, even when talking about how scared he is of black bears. I was reading the book aloud, and couldn't get through that section for about five minutes, I was laughing so hard.

I learned that I must be really sensitive because I cried through the entire book. :) Thanks for sharing the story, Rebecca.

I have read this book three times. It always holds up. The voice is simple and yet it rings with the power of naming--you get the sense that LeGuin is putting her wizardly teachings into practice. I liked it when Ged figures out that minnow girl's true name (i.e. Minnow) and also when he builds the boat with those nice people from the Western Isles. I guess what I have to say is this: you will be utterly engaged, both by the story and by the pervasive beauty of this world, where each object is invested with the magic of a good short story--strange, with its own inner logic. It's a fast read. Set aside a few hours in the evening, and you won't be able to stop.

** spoiler alert ** First read Feb 2011 Read it again right after finishing Catching Fire ahead of seeing the movie. The movie is good by the way. This one is still my favorite. I can't believe I didn't leave a comment the first time I read it. It's my favorite not because of the sagging middle or the racing action at the climax of the war, but because she's messed up at the end. Because trauma changes you, it takes time to deal with war and intense combat situations. Katniss is manipulated physically and emotionally so often without time to search out her own mind. She fought for literal survival of her body and mind. She can mend, but she is changed. Pita gets that, he is utterly devoted to her and they share a bond of experiences that Gale is not a part of. Also Gale was not only jealous if Pita as a competing suiter, but Gale was jealous of Katniss and Pita because they got to fight. Gale was a man of action with a lot of fight still in him, Pita was a peace lover forced to survive, and Katniss was a fighter that got all used up. It's not about the love triangle, it's that the book ended 'real'.

I recently read 'Tewkesbury 1471', which is in the same Pen & Sword series as this one. I quite like these Pen & Sword books. The hsitories are well written and they have some interesting pen pics of the leading figures involved. I quite regularly visit the City of Worcester, so I was already fairly familiar with some of the sites within the city. If I have a criticism, I feel that both books would benefit with the inclusion of a modern map, with battle sites etc., shown superimposed. The tour description of the city advises a climb to the top of Worcester Cathedral's tower, which I know is not always possible and not something I would relish.

Honest, loving, humor, and can truly relate to Ree from a woman in love. Almost makes you feel like you could be a wife of a Cowboy. The way parts of the book is written, you sometimes forget she is a real person and not a hopeless romantic created for the sake of a story. She does encourage the love between a man and his wife.
