Favorite character description: "He sits down in that grand fat-man way he has, spreading his legs, tossing the flaps of his overcoat behind him, as though he is going to make a fine meal of them all. He takes off his own homburg, palming it by the crown. His Indian hair stands thick and lustrous, threaded lately with silver. Gray hair makes Berko look wiser and kinder, an effect which, though he is in fact relatively wise and fairly kind, he will not hesitate to abuse. The bentwood chair grows alarmed at the scope and contour of Berko’s buttocks."

It's still one of my favorite books. Just love this story, it's sweet poignant and someone in a review mentioned magical and I agree completely. Lauren and Kit make such a great couple. I hugged it the first time I read it, years ago, and I hugged it this time as well.

sweet story.
I really enjoyed this. Her writing is so musical. Also very sort of mysterious--I feel like I'm out in the misty moors reading this stuff. I recommend this for anyone who writes lyrics for sure, plus fans of the Brontes.

I wish I had to read this book in school instead of Sense and Sensibilty or Pride and Prejudice. Or atleast have read it after on of those novels. The heroine is put into foster care at birth by her convict mother and is raised and taken care of by an upper midddle class family as a charity case. This is where the similarity ends between those books and this one. Instead of worrying about how to marry into a decent family and have such and such an annual income and get a better position in society, she ends up mistress to one of the sons and proposed to by the other. And it continues like this throughout the whole book. Although she does give a constant accounting of her income and she often is in dire straits, she continually reinvents herself and bounces right back.

Fun book! 50 or so poems and some childhood songs. Definitely good for a ghoulish giggle.

Total guilty pleasure--making a bodice ripping sequel to Pride and Prejudice should be o so very wrong...but I liked it (she admits with a pained expression)...please don't hate me.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child know how to scare the shit out of people. I am a huge fan of Preston and Child. They have a way of writing thrillers that hit every emotion, that are unlike any other novel I’ve ever gotten my hands on, and they just plain make an impact. Nora Kelly, an archeologist, receives a letter from her father who has been missing and presumed dead for decades. At the same time she is attacked by creatures that haunt her daydreams for weeks after. The letter tells of the legendary city of Quivara, a city of gold. With an expedition in toe, she leads the group into the canyons of the American west in search of the city and, unknowingly, danger. As usual the authors are amazing writers, and I love their styles. It’s simple with a dash of something exotic. The characters are all fleshed out with an accuracy that helps you to follow their every move and believe their dialogue. They’re grisly, make you shudder and produce horror on an entirely new level. There’s a mystery, which is answered with a twist and the most curious of answers. It’s never a cut and dry source for suspense, there are more elements that drag the reader deeper into the story. Biased I may be, but I’m extremely picky when it comes to mysteries. I’ve read ones that are pure cliché and thrillers that just bore me with their corny premises. I praise these authors, and this book, because of how well it was written, how on the edge of my seat it pushes me, and because it’s a damn good thrill ride.
